An excellent portable hard drive that is likely to remain in working order for a very long time thanks to its rugged nature, keeping your data safe and secure. If you don’t already have a portable hard drive, this is definitely one you should consider.

The portable hard drive is one of those indispensable gadgets no tech-head can do without nowadays.

Storing and transporting large amounts of data is not what it used to be: DVDs and flash drives simply have far too little storage capacity (for the most part anyway) to store your media and all-important backups of your files. Enter the LaCie Rugged Hard Disk portable hard drive.

The unit I was given for review sported 160GB of storage space and featured FireWire 800/400 and USB 2.0 (there are a number of variants available in terms of size and features – it all depends on your requirements and preferences).

One of the main selling points of the drive is its ‘rugged’ nature. While I couldn’t muster up the courage to put this ruggedness to the test (there was no way I was going to throw this thing at a wall to see if it bounced back untarnished), it certainly looks the part. Insulated in a “shockresistant rubber bumper,” protected by an aluminium shell and boasting internal shock absorbers, I’m pretty sure this hard drive can take a beating.

That’s not to say you should tie it to the back of your 4x4 and drive through marshlands, but it should survive everyday accidents.

The drive’s performance is awesome. To give an example, I transferred just under 5GB to the drive in around two minutes using USB 2.0. In the packaging you’ll find all the cables needed to get up and running.

You’ll also find a disk containing a few utilities, drivers and links to Web pages of other LaCie products and accessories. The most useful of these utilities is the 1-Click Backup software, which allows you to create backups of all your important files to the external hard drive quickly and easily.

Power is delivered to the drive via a separate USB cable, so you won’t need an external power source.

To be honest, this external drive can’t really be faulted. You’re not likely to break it anytime soon, so it’ll definitely provide a safe place to store your all-important media collection and backups.
