Amatomu and Afrigator were launched within days of each other, and the two blog aggregators have proven to be a hit among new media enthusiasts.
This raises the question as to how the compare regarding unique visitors and page views. According to the latest statistics from the Online Publishers Association (OPA) and the Website Association of South Africa (WASA), Amatomu is currently winning the race.
During June 2008 Amatomu attracted 6 085 unique monthly visitors and served 37 387 pages. Over the same period Afrigator notched up 4 987 unique visitors and served 19 942 pages.
It should however be noted that June was a particularly poor month for Afrigator. During May Afrigator served 29 210 pages to 7433 unique monthly visitors.
Amatomu’s future
Good news for Amatomu enthusiasts is that the website is now hosted locally by Afrihost which means better response times and access to the blogging aggregator on local only ADSL accounts.
Not such good news is that the founders of Amatomu – Matthew Buckland and Vincent Maher – have both recently resigned from the Mail & Guardian joining 24.com and Vodacom respectively.
As Amatomu is a Mail & Guardian product it is unlikely that either Buckland or Maher will still be directly involved in the running and strategy of the website – something that does not bode well for this new media project.
