New ring discovered around Saturn

A new ring has been discovered surrounding Saturn, and it’s a big one. Comprised of ice and dust, the ring is on the outer limits of Saturn’s system, between 6 and 13 million kilometres from the planet. It is theorised that the material in the ring may be shedding from Saturn’s moon Phoebe which orbits within the ring. Saturn is named after the Roman god of agriculture.

NASA rocket doomed to crash into the moon

This is the latest attempt to confirm that water exists just under the surface of everyone’s favourite satellite. At around 13:30 (GMT+2) on Friday, the LCROSS spacecraft will collide with a crater on the southern pole of the moon, sending around 355 tons of debris flying up to 10 kilometres above the moon’s surface. Earth based scientists will analyse the debris for traces of water. A viable source of water on the moon could make a moon-base all the more likely.

Asteroid will miss the Earth (probably)

The best news so far is that the trajectory of the 180 metre long Apophis asteroid has been recalculated. Initially thought to have a 2.7% chance of ruining someone’s day in 2029, that scenario has been ruled out.

On April 13 2036, the Asteroid will have swung around for another try, but the probability of impact has been reduced from one-in-45 000, to four-in-one million. The next chance Apophis has for wreaking celestial retribution will come in 2068. No concrete predictions are available for this date as of yet, so tell your grandkids to start building a shelter.
