I am sure many people experience the same issues I experience when it comes to hard drive clutter. The kind of clutter that eats up space but you never seem to know exactly what it is. Maybe it is a bloated downloads folder with all the versions of your favorite browser in since 1982.
One tends to descend down a rabbit hole of “Oh my gosh, where did my space go!??!” sooner than one care to realize. You delete a bit of space here, clean out the recycle bin there, but nothing ever comes together quite enough to give you breathing space.
I have the ultimate rule of thumb. Be cruel! I don’t take any responsibility for lost pictures, videos or anything you might find important and lost should you follow my advice, but here goes.
Keep things organized from the start. Put music in the right folder. Put video downloads in organized folders.
If you have a relatively fast internet connection (DSL etc), there is simply no reason why you should keep program installation files smaller than 20MB on your machine. Download them when you need them. The chances of updated files being available next time you download are pretty good anyway.
Keep pictures, videos and personal music centralized. Keep it in a folder or two that can easily be backed up to DVD or any storage medium of your choice.
Make backups of mail every now and again too.
If you are sure any important files are backed up do not even flinch at the idea of formatting! Go crazy from time to time. Even pictures and videos in the modern era of digital snaps will not be missed too much should they disappear. It sounds harsh, but it is true.
A good format and reinstall can give as much, if not more joy as a righteous visit to a fast food joint!
Don’t be afraid to purge! Be a disk drive Nazi!
