South Africa has four major banks: Absa, FNB, Nedbank and Standard Bank. So which bank has the biggest online user base?
Online banking has changed the banking behaviour of many South Africans and as such it is one of the top activities online.
All four of the major banks have realized that online banking is a must-have but it is Standard Bank that currently leads the race although Absa is a very close second.
According to Standard Bank they attract close to 1-million unique visitors a month and serve more than 6 million page impressions per month. Standard Bank has announced that they are revamping their website to improve ease of use and functionality which is an indication of their aggressive drive to push online banking.
“The changes we have made to our website are based on a usability study we undertook with our banking customers and other site users. As a direct result of this study, we took a needs-driven approach to deliver a cleaner, fresher website which makes it easier to access information in line with their needs,” said Peter Schlebusch, CEO, Personal and Business Banking at Standard Bank South Africa.
Standard Bank and Absa Bank are neck and neck regarding traffic (graph 1) but Standard Bank consistently has a wider reach than Absa (graph 2).
FNB is fairly far off in 3rd place and then Nedbank comes in fourth.
