Although the Blackberry App World, RIM’s application store for Blackberry handsets, has only been around for a few days it already has over five hundred programs on offer. While it has only been rolled out to UK, US and Canadian users there are plans to bring it to South African users.
In anticipation of this announcement here are five of the most popular applications available at Blackberry App World at this current time.
Facebook (Free)
Although it isn’t yet perfect and it’s hardly an improvement from last year’s Facebook application it’s still the quickest and most convenient way to get your Facebook fix on a Blackberry.
Viigo (Free)
With this application you can manage plenty of feeds, directing them into one useful application. This essentially allows you to pull all of your information sources into one easy to use source.
World Mate Live (Free)
This application is specifically designed with travellers in mind and enables you to check weather, flight status, book hotels and share your itineraries with friends. There’s also a currency converter and a time zone calculator.
Guitar Hero World Tour
Yes, that’s right, Guitar Hero has indeed permeated the reaches of mobile phone technology. This version comes with 15 songs and operates through the use of several buttons on the keypad. Apparently it’s a little difficult to play but I don’t find that concerning.
Opera Mini 4.2 (Free)
Although RIM offers a pretty decent standard browser Opera Mini 4.2 far outshines it in terms of power and load times. The new browser comes standard with RSS feed support, a convenient zoom box, flexible bookmark management and a switchable mobile view.
Whether or not these apps will be available in the South African market and if they will be free is another kettle of fish, however. Either way the Blackberry App World looks like it might just be a serious iPhone contender.
