Last month Microsoft announced that it would have to lay off 5,000 workers and on the 22 of January the first 1,400 workers were given the boot.

Now it turns out they’ve overpaid some of them and have issued a letter asking for money back.
Microsoft’s HR department claimed it was due to an administrative error but failed to give further details or provide a breakdown of the calculation error.

The official company line is: “We ask that you repay the overpayment and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience to you.”

Being fired is damnably inconvenient but being asked to give money back is just rubbing salt in an already festering wound.

All sorts of problems kick in like how you compensate for the tax deducted on the inflated pay outs and the time taken to pay the money back, not to mention the PR problem you are creating by demanding money back from unemployed people.
