Okay, so we are an hour and 19 minutes away from the Super 14 final and I am on my way out to go and enjoy some serious braai activities! I have got to share some very interesting articles and opinion online regarding Microsoft’s Bing search engine, Wikipedia banning the Scientologists from posting and also a quick pre-game well wish for the Bulls.
Mike Elgan on Bing’s culture shifting properties
First off, you have got to read Mike Elgan’s article on the new Bing search engine at Computer World. He brings forward some rather interesting opinion on the somewhat slanted results we can expect from decision making search engines based on the model Bing is following and the risks it holds for us if Google and company decided to emulate it. The article can be found here.
I have to agree with many of the concerns as it will inevitably drag in the more sheepish among us and if there isn’t a tweak to how it works and gives results I will have to stick to something I can “trust”. I put “trust” in inverted commas because “trust” is something that still needs to be explored in terms of its true meaning in a digital world. Can we really trust our service providers? I tend to think we can, but what does that trust mean? Does it simply mean I trust to be so small and insignificant in the throngs of people using online services that I trust my information is insignificant too? It is just a thought worth investigating.
Scientologists get shunned by Wikipedia
Second thing you might want to read more about is the Chris Matyszczyk blog on the Wikipedia decision to block all edit rights to any and all IP addresses belonging to the Church of Scientology. You can read this very interesting blog post here.
I think it is safe to say Wikipedia took the high road on this one, not completely banning articles on Scientology, but rather keeping the channels objective. That is a good thing in my opinion. Read all about it. These two topics alone are worth loads of Googling and Binging. Is it right to call it Binging when using Bing search in future?

Damnit I hope you guys don’t lose! That would be seriously disappointing seeing as I have been so mild mannered in my discussions supporting you infront of my friends who are not all Bulls supporters but for the sake of a South African team in the final will scream and shout for the Bulls this afternoon at 17h30 South African time. Please guys, give it your all, don’t peeve off the referee too much and give the Chiefs something to cry about.
