The total number of searches occurring per month in the US has increased by 20.3% year on year.
This measurement, according to Nielsen Online, was made when the months of May 2009 and May 2008 were compared. In May 2008 searches in the US totalled 7.8 billion whereas searches in May 2009 totalled 9.4 billion.

The leader among the various search providers was predictably Google with an estimate 6 billion queries entered in May 2009. This accounts for 63.2 percent of all queries submitted for the month. Behind Google were Yahoo! Search and MSN/Windows Live Search with 1.6 billion and 891 million search queries for the month respectively.

According to Nielsen Online Google has enjoyed a year on year growth of 28.2% with regard to search terms. Yahoo! Search grew by 22.3% although MSN/ Windows Live Search shrank by a considerable 14.6%, year on year. Maybe Microsoft’s new search, Bing, will help boost the company’s Internet presence.

Although Google is by far a firm favourite year on year it may be interesting to note the impact made by the recently released Bing. Alexa.com, a resource for comparing website traffic has reported that despite a large spike in popularity Bing is still trailing behind Google by a considerable margin.
The top three highest ranking search resources also represented the top three web brands for May 2009. Nielsen Online reported that Google was the largest web brand for the month with 131 million unique users in the US for the month followed by Yahoo and MSN/Windows Live.

Despite this Google displayed the least amount of time spent on the site per month of the three. The average US user spent only 1 hour 17 minutes actively using the site, while Yahoo! and MSN/ Microsoft Live users spent an average of 3 hours 14 minutes and 2 hours 20 minutes actively using the site respectively.
