Have you ever felt violated at work or not respected? Have these feelings ever made you wonder how much damage you could do to the company or department, knowing what you know? I must admit, there have been a couple of people I have been pondering sending virus after virus to, but never got my conscience to agree.
There is however, a big hush in information technology circles about employees possibly going postal so to speak. What would be the repercussions of an employee with sensitive access to an important system, going on a digital or cyber rampage?
The city of San Francisco in the USA recently got a bitter and also terrifying wake-up call after a systems engineer somehow got disgruntled enough to set off a series of network restriction to a networked server system that services some of the internal workings of the top city staffers.
He denied access to important stakeholders and technicians and as I am typing this to you, the City of San Francisco is paying hundreds of thousands of American taxpayer’s money to have this kidnapped system taken back under government control. Good job opportunity for whichever hacker got the job of getting the system back, but the alarm bells should be ringing across the globe.
There are various mission critical systems around South Africa for instance. Telecommunication server farms, Eskom and Telkom’s communication links etc.
What risks are lurking in the dark here in a country where getting peeved is so seemingly easy to do?
