South Africans have become accustomed to regular electricity blackouts, Eskom likes to call it load shedding, but it seems that a similar scenario may be played out on the international circuit regarding Internet connectivity.
According to research done by Nemertes Research and commissioned by a US lobby group for service providers and equipment vendors called Internet Innovation Alliance, the Internet may be clogged up and it is not all that far off.
They predict that in 2 years time the Internet may be bursting at the seams putting a halt to the super fast speeds currently enjoyed by Netizens. That is unless 137 billion US dollars is invested worldwide to upgrade networks.
Skeptics say that it is all a lot of hype to try and entrench the position of service providers to force users to pay to prioritize their traffic.
Service providers are currently pushing for big content providers to pay a premium for hogging bandwidth but this hits at the heart of Internet neutrality and may negatively influence the freedom that the Net provides.
