Crime Line, an initiative from the Department of Safety and Security, allows members of the public to send an SMS to 32211 and report a crime for R1-00.

This new project may help prevent crimes and it is a good start in the fight against the rampant crime in SA. One thing is for sure, it’s a great way to give the community access to policing services.
It’s good to hear that the Department of Safety and Security are starting to use technology to assist and especially a messaging technology with which most South Africans feel comfortable.

What is slightly alarming about the whole initiative is that these SMSs are relatively expensive for the man in the street but perhaps if it is successful the SAPS could organize for a free SMS service.
The ideal is for mobile operators to step up to the plate and not charge South Africans using this number to report a crime because in many remote or rural areas R1-00 is a hefty fee.

I would say a simple calculation of what it saves versus what it costs would justify this move, with the amount of crime in SA we are sure to save a packet. But for now it’s just good news that we have a service like this and hopefully it’ll be used to report more than just the raucous party across the street on a Friday night.
