I am all for new ideas, but clearly someone has to redefine the word idea or come up with something new because I always thought of new ideas as being inspiring. The following ‘ideas’ are clearly an indication of too much time, too little IQ.

First there’s the Hamster Home. It looks like an oversized hamster wheel, but inside the wheel is a lounge, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. The proposed idea is that someone with too much energy and too little space, will walk on the wheel, causing it to turn and then utilising whichever room is at the bottom of the wheel. It fits into a normal sized room, if you cut open the ceiling, meaning that it might be warmly embraced by those whose houses have been hit by a tornado and only have one room of their house left standing.

Another “idea” is the Reactiv [the spelling of the product name already raises a few flags] Cycling Jacket. The idea is for cyclists, who have already thrown away their masculinity by shaving their legs, to now throw away their dignity by looking like a Christmas tree every time they go cycling. Sure you may get home in one piece because half your body flashes like the petrol light on a Zimbabwean’s car, but you will be getting home to an empty bachelor flat, guaranteed to remain empty for the rest of your cycling life.

Then lastly, there’s the “idea” that might catch on in South Africa soon. Remember those stories we heard about people risking their lives to reconnect their electricity after Eskom cut them off? Well these days you only have to risk the chance of landing in prison after a security expert proved that hacking into a power company network and switching on or shutting down an entire grid is simple, and takes less than a days work. By the end of a full day, he had had taken over several machines at the unnamed power company, giving his team the ability to hack into the control network overseeing power production and distribution.
