The latest version of firmware for the Apple iPhone is now available. The 246 megabyte download brings a handful of new features for the iPhone, many of them for Google Maps. Still no MMS, SMS forwarding or cut-and-paste, though.
The official list of new features found in the iPhone include enhancements to Google Maps. It now has Street views, public transport and walking directions, display address of dropped pins and share location via email. All good and well if you live in the US!
Speaking of email, Apple has addressed some issues there as well. Firmware 2.2 resolves a few minor issues with scheduled fetching of email and improved formatting of wide HTML email.
There are a number of other fixes. Podcasts are now available for download in iTunes application (over Wi-Fi and data network), although I still haven’t gotten mine to work as it keeps telling me that the iTunes store is not available in SA. Apple improved the stability of Safari and users should see a decrease in call set-up failures, and lastly, pressing the Home button from any Home screen takes you to the first Home screen.
Since 2.2 is a major point update, and not a minor one like 2.1.1, I must say I was a little dissapointed at the limited new features added to the iPhone compared to bug fixes. I was also really hoping for a cut-and-paste functionality and SMS forwarding, but Apple has given no indication that it will ever provide these features.
