Sony Pictures are the first big studio to have jumped on board with HPs DVD manufactured-on-demand (MOD) service.

It looks like the perfect partnership – Sony Pictures provides the content and HP the behind the scenes manufacturing muscle.

According to Reuters the deal will allow Sony to offer a wider range of titles to customers because HP are able to press and ship single discs as the orders are received through affiliated web sites.
HP has signed up 40 other content providers and digitized about 5,000 titles for its electronic library since the service became available a year ago, said Doug Warner, vice president of HP’s digital content services business.

But Sony is the first big studio to get on board although according to HP they will not be the last.

“We believe a significant portion of the 80,000 content libraries out there would fall within the sweet spot of the demand curve for (manufacturing on demand).”
