I can remember it clearly. I never was a reader, but something about Good Will Hunting intrigued me. And so I started reading…
Now, many years later, there are always four or five books next to my bed, some of them study material, some of them purely for relaxing. I have piled through a speed reading course and taken my casual reading pace from 250 words per minute to around 1600…and now I have given in to audible.com as well.
Audible.com is the home for audio books. Having been bought recently by Amazon.com for a cool $300 million, the resources are endless, and for someone like me who loves to read and has to travel, an iphone full of audiobooks is just what I needed.
Audible claim to have around 50 000 titles available and for between $5 and $15 a month [depending on which special you get in on] you get a monthly subscription and a free audio book. Then, as a member, picking and purchasing your next book is just a few clicks away.
Currently, I am a few hours into Khaled Hosseini’s ‘A thousand splendid suns’ which I got for free as part of a 14 day free trial subscription. Usually I could have used my monthly credit to get this, effectively costing me R120 or so. The best local price I could find was R224. The download was 110MB, but if you prefer the ‘AM radio quality’ it would only be a 35MB file. It is also the unabridged version, 11 hours long rather than 7 hours which also made it a bigger file.
All things considered, it is a very simple and seemless process, and it makes facing the Joburg traffic a whole lot more bearable.
