Primedia’s national anti-crime campaign has resulted in a total of 33 arrests by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the recovery of stolen goods and drugs to the value of over R1.1 million.
Members of the SAPS have had their hands full since the launch of the multi-million rand campaign three weeks ago as information about crimes and criminals continues to pour in to the SMS tip-off line 32211, and the crime website www.crimeline.co.za.
“From the moment the campaign started and the data centre opened at Primedia Place, Johannesburg, the response has been phenomenal,” said Yusuf Abramjee, group head of news and talk programming at Primedia Broadcasting and Primedia Anti-Crime project co-ordinator.
“In less than a month, we have received a huge amount of tip-offs via the SMS service and website and through these tip-offs police have made countless successful arrests and seizures for crimes ranging from cable theft, armed robbery and drug dealing to hijacking, fraud and murder.”
Crimes busted
Last week, police received a tip-off advising of the whereabouts of a stolen BMW at a complex in Winchester Hills, which resulted in police recovering four stolen vehicles worth R840 000 and arresting two suspects. At the same time, a number of drug dealers were busted in various operations and valuable information on three men who were arrested on charges of murder was received.
During the past week, police arrested eight drug dealers; one in Hillbrow, two in Westbury, Sophiatown, and five in Wilgeheuwel, Roodepoort. They also confiscated seven packets of Rocks, 20gms Cat and over 100 bags of cannabis. “The drug arrests and seizure of narcotics is of great value as it helps to keep this evil off our streets and away from our children. Drugs often contribute to the violence which accompanies various types of crimes,” said Abramjee.
“The Johannesburg Dog Unit was especially effective in reacting to drug tip-offs and I must thank them, together with the team from Primedia and the SAPS.”
Information was also received on suspects selling pirated DVD copies in Douglasdale to the general public. The Counterfeit Group at Commercial Branch investigated the information, arresting two suspects and confiscating 44 pirated DVDs.
“We’ve also received a number of tip-offs about violent crimes that have occurred,” said Abramjee. “Since last Thursday, there have been 12 arrests directly as a result of information passed on to Crime Stop from Primedia – and one tip is helping the police tremendously with their investigations into a murder case in Dawn Park, in which three people have already been arrested.
Government backs the initiative
Primedia’s anti-crime campaign is backed by the full support of the Minister for Safety and Security, Charles Nqakula, and the National Police Commissioner, Jackie Selebi, and encourages the public to report crime anonymously if necessary, without fear of victimisation or reprisals.
“We were very excited when the first arrest was made in this campaign. Now, we are really impressed with the breakthroughs made over the past week as a result of tip-offs from the community,” said Director Sally de Beer of the National Police Commissioner’s office.
The public are asked to be very specific when SMSing their tip-offs by including names, addresses, descriptions, vehicle registration numbers, details of the alleged offence and police case numbers if applicable. The more information that is given, the better.
The campaign’s core focus next week will be on illegal firearms. If you know of anyone who deals in, or possesses illegal firearms, pass on the information by SMSing 32211 (at a cost of R1), or logging on to www.crimeline.co.za.
