Gone are the days when merchant ships were raided by a clapped out tug bearing the skull and crossbones. The modern day Somali pirates have gone hi tech choosing to raid their victims from luxury yachts armed with satellite telephones and hand-held missiles.
The new breed of pirate is tarnishing the rugged, tough reputation that traditional pirates took decades to cultivate. These chaps are apparently quite polite.
“The Somali “marines” have a reputation for courteous treatment of their hostages, so long as they are confident that a ransom will be paid,” reported The Independent.
The term ‘marines’ has come to describe the modern pirate who is often a fisherman turned to piracy as it is a far more lucrative profession.
But don’t let the fact that many of these pirates were previously honest fishermen deceive you. These groups are highly organised and often use converted fishing vessels as “mother ships” to direct smaller boats, who are directed by satellite telephone, to menace targets.
