I find it interesting, and at times rather frustrating, that I am not able to get 3G at home. I kinda figured my service-provider was busy rolling it out ever so carefully [and ever so slowly] and perhaps I should have more patience. One would think, living in the CAPITAL CITY of our country, that we should have some sort of G – I cant even get Edge most of the time!
This wasn’t as big a frustration until we went on holiday recently. I love getting away. Which is why we dissapear to a tiny little back-end dorpie that has one little petrol station, two ‘stores’ [no guarantee that their fridges work] and pretty much nothing else. But for some strange reason, there is a buffet of all-you-can-eat 3G.
Perhaps this is because we have running water back in Pretoria that my service provider figures that they will even it out and dish out oodles of 3G in a place where 99.9% of the inhabitants are in retirement, 0.05% are too poor to care, and then there’s me, and my new iPhone 3G. So I did some hunting [since I had the bandwidth!!], and this is what I found:
I must admit, it took a lot more googling than usual to even find this map, but the reason why I cant get 3G at home is because it’s patchy at best. However, when I looked at the spot where we had spent our holiday I found 3G coverage even in areas that were labeled ‘open space’ on the map! I had a good laugh.
Hopefully someone will see the opportunity to provide detailed maps of 3G availability around the country. It really helps to know before you go somewhere whether or not you’ll be able to check your email. Besides, most often in these back-end places people don’t even know what you’re talking about when you ask them if there is any 3G available, and reply ‘no sir, we only sell normal speedos’!!!
