Many people may wonder how many SMSs people send in South Africa each year, Vodacom gives some insight into the answer. Vodacom South Africa has transmitted 4.5 billion SMSs over its network during the year ending March 31, 2007.
This accounts for a large portion of Vodacom’s total data revenue, which in turn accounts for 9.4% of the company’s total service revenue.
An interesting question may be what amount of data was transferred through these SMSs.
According to most sources the average size of an SMS is around 140 bytes. This means that the 4.5 Billion SMSs sent over the last year on the Vodacom Network equates to around 587 GB of data.
