Yesterday I got Battlefield: Bad Company 2 for the PS3. When I tried installing it at about 14:15, it notified me that before I could play online I needed to download a 1752MB patch. I let the download start, and after downloading for a bit I figured it would take about 8-10 hours to download. After the download reached over 10% I went out, figuring it would download through the night.

When I got home this morning I found the PS3 had switched itself off.
I tried starting the game and it looks like it wants to download the entire 1752MB again!

Examining the router log I found the following:
My iBurst link has been up since 15:00 on 2011/01/01.
The PS3 downloaded at about 400kbps from 14:15 until about 17:30.
The PS3 disconnected from the wireless network at 19:32.

I haven't received today's usage report yet so I don't know the damages.

Doesn't the PS3 supporting resuming?
How can I download such a big update?
Unfortunately this particular download cannot be backgrounded, so I can't even play other games while it downloads to prevent the PS3 from shutting itself off.

Disable the "automatic poweroff" feature in the systems setting. This got me luckily while only doing a 400MB download and not the 1,7GB BFBC2 download. I was also rather dissapointed that the PS3 does not support download-resume.

You could also check official forums to see if you can rather download it from your PC.

Oh, and once your kicking some BFBC2 butt, get Vietnam its so awesome - the patch is actually the BFBC2-Vietnam game so when you purchase online, it only downloads a 100KB file to activate.

Ok so I know lots of guys that are having trouble with using a proxy to download patches and PSN downloads etc.

I know there is already a sticky thread on proxies but I know that the majority of guys don't like reading through the whole thing to find out how to do this, so having step by step instructions in the first post should help a lot.

If you are not sure why you would use a proxy it's because the download will go WAY faster than if you do it on the PS3.

1. Download the proxy software from www.ps3prox.co.za (Vista or XP)

Open the ps3prox software. Select PS3 and click on get IP's. The IP address of your PC will be shown. Enter the IP address and leave port as 8080. Save settings then click start.

You will use this IP again in step 2c.

2. Set up the proxy on your PS3.
2a. Settings > network settings > internet connection settings
2b. Custom > enter details as per your usual set up until you get to proxy server.
2c. Use proxy server. Address (The IP Address of your PC) same IP as in 1. Port number 8080.

Complete the set up and test the connection. It should work as usual.

Now your PS3 is set up to run on the proxy software.

3a. Insert the game that you want to update. As the update starts downloading on the PS3 cancel it.
3b. Go to your PC and on the ps3prox software it should have the link to the download in the "log" tab. Open this link and download the file. Save it somewhere on your PC where it can easily be found. Eg Desktop
3c. While the file downloads click on the "replace files" tab.
3d. Save XML File: click browse and save this anywhere on your PC. Again the desktop is easy.
3e. Description: Any description of the file eg. BFBC2 Patch
3f. Download link: copy and paste the exact file link used in the "log". eg. of a link http://b0.ww.np.dl.playstation.net/t...g?product=0085
3g. Local Path Patch: Browse and select the downloaded file when it's completed.
3h. Click on add.

4. The file should now be added to your proxy software and the PS3 will know where to "look" for it.

5. Go to your PS3 and start the game again. You will be prompted to download the update. Select ok and the update should download from the saved file on your computer.

NB!!! It is of vital importance that the PC and PS3 are using the same router. And your PC must be ON and running the proxy software when copying to the PS3.

PS. The same instructions apply for downloading demos etc from the PSN. As the download starts just cancel it and the link will be in the "log" as with the game patch.

Vietnam is very worth it :)

Disable the "automatic poweroff" feature in the systems setting.
I'm not sure this will solve the problem. I think what happened in this case was a download error occured and then after two hours of inactivity, the PS3 switched off.
I was also rather dissapointed that the PS3 does not support download-resume.

Thanks guys for the proxy tip, it worked perfectly!

BTW, www.ps3prox.co.za has since been taken down but there are working links here:
