I love suits, if I could wear one everyday I would, but at the moment I only have one good suit and I don't want to 'over wear' it.

Which is why I'm searching for a really good tailor, the best tailors are the ones people recommend.

So does anyone here know a good tailor that will give me a good deal on a custom suit?
I live in Pretoria so anywhere here, or in JHB is fine.

On a side note I also go crackers over trench coats (NOT OVERCOATS  ), I have searched and searched for a place that sells them here but the only ones I can find are the exact ones I hate. Would be great if someone here has the same trench coat fetish and could recommend a place.

There are the kinds of trench coats I like, don't really want to order them from the US. I'd prefer a local shop, for local people.
Link Another Link Again, A Link LINK!

As you can see they are kinda goth, no, they are goth...

Which leads me to another side, side note. Does anyone know any goth shop in Pretoria/JHB? I have looked, can't find.

Tell me about it, I ****ing live here.

*edit*

There's also a dude who's always at the metal gigs, with a stand of goth apparel.

It's a pity I'm not a goth, this town seems to cater for them.

I'm not a goth either, I just like a few items of clothing that fit into the goth category. Like those trench coats, I like the pale makeup too. I'm a soft-core goth I guess.
I'll never be able to pull off a full goth appearance though, with my hair (Long, blond... over halfway down my back - METAL!) I'd look like a child of the dark who spends too much time in the sun xD.

These metal gigs you speak of, which ones are they?

These days, there's only really one place to hear metal in PE, a dive called Jesters in Central.

Have to intervene a little here...PE...goth? I don't think so. Actually it's all pretty much died out in PE. As for Jesters...metal? Really? I think the term you're after is "emo." Allegedly when it was still "Jack Hammer's" it was kinda' metal.

*All info provided by the PE/Gtown-dwelling-ex-goth-now-metal girlfriend and the 18 year old club-exploring-brother. (I'm an old CPT metal-premises-occupying-person, so the woman and I are on the same wave length when it comes to "these" things. ;) )

We're OT here... but speaking to my daughter and she reckons it depends on when you go to Jesters. She only goes to the metal gigs as some of her colleagues are in the various bands.

So it's difficult to label Jesters as either metal, goth or "emo".

I, of course, use the term "metal" loosely when associated with PE -due to the fact that there really isn't a "metal" scene here whatsoever.... In fact there is hardly a metal scene in Cape Town these days, what with the closing down of "The Eye Of Horus" last year. Sure you've got your "Gandalf's" and "Mordor" but that's more of a poser-ground now than anything else. Gone are the days of "The Playground," "The Stage," "Arties" and "Nightmare."

As mentioned, compared to "those" places...there's not much going on in PE ;)

(That's why when I leave Cape Town -for PE - I always, jokingly, say I'm going on vacation to the little backward hick town. Note : I say this in jest.) It gets a little boring here though purely BECAUSE there is nowhere to go. But it's nice :p )

Who called PE goth?

As for Jesters and metal, I'm all ears to hear where else you're going to hear screaming and distorted guitars played live in Port Elizabeth.

Anyway...I digress...suits are...nice.

Still prefer my docs, jeans and Slayer though. If anyone out there knows of anybody who caters for gothy (female) clothing, though, please feel free to post here. It beats the woman having to go to CPT to acquire her clothing from Alternative Design -as good as they are.

Just because it's screaming and distorted, doesn't mean it's metal...could just be a bad PA/sound engineer :p

As for the goth it was more referrence to the "scene" -going hand in hand with the clothing, etc. ;)

Jokes aside, Jesters is the only place in this city where you are going to hear bands that would call themselves metal. We can get all elitist about it and pretend it's not proper metal, but times change and that's what the youth seem to enjoy (although it tends to make my ears bleed, personally).

It's actually really a pity, PE used to actually have a bit of a cool music scene. :(

All-right.

I'm assuming you mean business suits. The Oriental Plaza in JHB has tailors that make custom suits.

What kind of price range are you looking at though?
You might find it cheaper to buy a return ticket to Hong Kong or Dubai and to go have some made there.

Another route is to keep and eye on or subscribe to the mailing lists of the high end suit shops (Hugo Boss, Paul Smith, etc) and buy their suits when on special. I saw a Hugo Boss suit last year marked down to R8000. When you buy suits in that league they are not completely finished. You buy it and then have it tailored before you wear it (tacked is what they call it I think).

Jesters : Too true, too true...AFAIK (which is not much when it comes to this side of the world, really) Jesters IS the only place.

Getting all elitist : Truth is emo is not thrash -which I consider the "purest form of metal"...if there is/was such a thing. I'm old school so it makes a difference to me when some new kid off the block comes and "claims" emo as metal. As you can tell I am quite passionate about this, so it's not about "elitist".... Saying emo is metal is like saying emo is punk...or punk is metal...and it really isn't. Of course, if it's not your preferred genre, then it all sounds the same. (Like hip-hop and RnB and all that gangster stuff does to me, but you tell someone into that stuff, that it's all the same and see what kind of response you get ;) ) Yes, I was "the new kid" too many many moons ago, but I had a lot of respect for and classified the music in their correct genres, as I was taught to. ;)

Ok, too much about music...sorry about going off topic...my apologies. (My favorite quote on these forums it seems: "Different Strokes, different folks." If you like the sound/music then don't let anybody stop you from listening to it, regardless of genre, etc. is what I always say.)

So I'm told...so I'm told. Would've been nice to check it out.

All-right.
;)

Suits! ...where were we...yes, they're nice!

EDIT : (Just also HAVE to add that I'm not just "restricted" to metal...any GOOD music, made by REAL musicians...on REAL instruments works for me. It's just my passion lies mainly with the heavier stuff :) )

Thats actually true xD

I was recently in Mauritius for a month and found this amazing tailor there that would make a fully custom suit for me, including jacket, pants, waistcoat, tie and a shirt. All for R 1200... I really should have bought it, but I didn't because I was being stupid.

The return ticket to Mauritius + The cost of the suit adds up to the amount you'd pay here in SA for a similar quality one.

Who is claiming 'emo' as metal? :p. Your assertion that thrash is the "purest form of metal" I find a bit odd, as thrash is simply a sub-genre within the very large and varied realm of metal.

You sound mega-elitist. Try not to take that the wrong way. :p

Saying emo is metal is like saying emo is punk...or punk is metal...and it really isn't. Of course, if it's not your preferred genre, then it all sounds the same.

Sure, not certain what all this emo-talk is about though? I don't have a preferred genre myself - Good music is good music, no matter what little box you wish to place it in.

Fair enough, but at the end of the day isn't the thrill of listening to a good song totally independent of how it is labelled? No harm in doing so, but I know so many people who will turn their noses up at something, simply because it does not fit into a preconceived genre that a person enjoys.

Oh, yeah, what I've been obsessing about the whole time. Doh.

God, I'm rambling, time for food.

What do you mean 'real instruments' and 'real musicians'?

You can always shop at either of the zeplins rockshacks in Pretoria. Both of them have goth type clothing.

Yep.

I mean that thrash was the spring board from whence it all came *; your death metals, your black metals, your grindcore, your hardcore, your "new" core -for lack of a better word, your grunge -cringe - your screamo and your (gulp) emo. I guess if we have to be pc, then it ALL came from the new wave of British heavy metal -which in turn came from your hard rock -> rock -> blues -> etc.
When I say "purest," I mean that everyone retained the "thrashy" guitars sound. Power-chord-striking (I can't make any music, nor can I read music anymore, but I'm sure you know what I mean, right?)
*yes, I know that's a bold statement to make

You sound mega-elitist. Try not to take that the wrong way. :p

To me most things have a place, note not all, but many things do. There is, after all, "a time and place for" most things! :p

Sure, not certain what all this emo-talk is about though? I don't have a preferred genre myself - Good music is good music, no matter what little box you wish to place it in.

The emo thing came up with the Jesters thing and the type of music being played there, etc. It just iritates me a little when the emo kids come around with their little attitudes of emo being the one and only genre in metal that means anything. If the emo kids only knew how the old metal heads had to "fight" for the music -so that there could be potential spin-offs for, said, emo kids to enjoy...maybe they'd have more respect for how it all came about. Sorry, slightly OFF-off topic. (Suit-guy must be very annoyed with all this...sorry guy. No harm/offence meant)

AGREED! Give the music a chance, whatever the claimed genre...but don't go calling a guitar a bass -as closely as they may be related, they're still not the same thing, right? :)

God, I'm rambling, time for food.

What do you mean 'real instruments' and 'real musicians'?

I mean, a group of people who sit and create something as a collective with real instruments. OR a person with so much talent that they're able to create something for all instruments, go out and record each intrument individually. To me a real musician is not someone who can sit behind a computer and make music for all instruments. It's the process of knowing how to read/write music and recreating it on actual instruments...not using various samples...it's the person / people that can play that/those instrument(s) live. Wait, there we go...live performances with actual instruments. (Took me a while, but I eventually got there.) All this said though, I'm not taking anything away from DJ Basement-dweller who created a whole song without knowing how to play a single instrument in his...well...basement! You still have to be talented and, of course have an ear for music!

Side Note : I think it's quite ironic for all this to come from a person who can't play an instrument, nor create any music...but I THINK I have an ear for music...or I'd like to BELIEVE I do ;) Also, I by no means claim to be any kind of music expert, but I base it all on what I've experienced/seen through the decades...how it all evolved, if you will.

Ok, seriously now...BACK TO SUITS!
