Are you having ADSL problems since beginning of the year too?

I've noticed a trend on here, lots of post relating to people experiencing a deterioration of their ADSL service since around mid Dec/beginning of this year.

If you're affected, I'd be interested to see whether this is a localized problem or have some correlation to which service/ISP you're using.

Please state your problem, when it started, where you are and which ISP you're using.

Frequent disconnects since mid Dec, (brand new) modem periodically unable to sync at 2meg on a 4meg line.
Noticeable degradation in overall performance.

I'm in Erasmuskloof, Pta, using Afrihost & Telkom's 9gig offer.

Mweb 4096 Uncapped... Richmond KZN Exchange. High pings to mweb.co.za & timeout's to facebook & youtube.... high packet loss to to Internet Solutions. speed jump around alot. i tried with other SAIX account and very similar results. seems to be an exchange problem.

Well my landline & adsl have been completely dead since the weekend. Probably a pure line issue. Before that my adsl seemed fine. I'm with mweb - 384k uncapped, unshaped.

4MB allmost never connects at 4096 anymore since middle December. After router restart connects at 2500 - 3600 constant line drops and reconnects later it goes down as far as 640k down and 512 upload..

Empangeni. Tried with Afrihost Capped 40GB package and Axxess prepaid account (I requested my account be changed to SAIX back when they went to IS. Username has .s at the end and can download from SAIX news server). Also borrowed next door friends Telkom account for 1 night as testing purpose. So not a ISP problem.
Constant noise on line.
Bought new filters, phone, new router (but wanted a wireless router anyways.. so no real problem)

Last night took 3.5 - 4 hours to download 180mb file from a normal http website (not rapidshare / megaupload those type sites)

So really peed of by now, Telkom unable to fix after about 8 fault reports allready. Logging yet another fault tomorrow, which is gonna make number 9 then..

O yeah here is my Speedtest result at the current moment for my 4MB line which was rock solid basically the whole year last year till mid december...

Local from Empangeni to Joburg

Empangeni to Washington xD :)

Same for me as well.....local and international. 4Mb via afrihost, webafrica & axxess....all similar results. Off course this is so frustrating, as there is NO online gaming with this connection since DEC.....3 calls logged with Telkom already, they just say faulty board and no ETA??

Constantia park in pretoria is probably the most unstable ADSL I've had. I have had ADSL lines in 5 different areas in Pretoria in the last 5 years and in Constantia park my line is frequently completely dead apart from voice. This does seem to have gotten worse since December yes. The sync is great at least, solid 4096, but it should be higher if I understood correctly when Telkom said this area is 10mbps. When I tried calling about it the guy just didn't really seem to know what to do. Every time I've called to report a fault the service has been good at least, even though the fault takes some days to sort out.

Mine worked fine till begining of Jan, ran perfect at 4m, then speeds died. Still synchs at 4m but only get 1m speeds dropped line to 3m and no problems at all - Benoni

I am not having any speed issues with my ADSL connection.I just dont have a connection due to a lightning strike on 25/12/2010.No response whatsoever from Telkom even although we have phoned them at least 25 times since then and only get a different story every time.Tonight I am going to try Neotel but hate signing contracts.I have no 3G coverage but have excellent I Burst coverage. But to drop from a 6 meg line to approximately 1 meg eish.

4MB line, 40GB Afrihost.
Speedtest is fine, but youtube is a mess. 10kbps most of the time.
http downloads no problems and not using torrents or something similar.
CPT, Kuilsrivier.

frequent disconnects/ mid dec/CT/ telscum.
i had a techie here yesterday, all he did was put a pots filter on my phone line and said that should fix the prob...OF COURSE IT DID NOT as my connection went down 10 mins after the "techies" left!!!

Thanks very much Jabulani

Thank you very much Jabulani.... :D :D :D

I am very positive about Jabulani that has just been busy with my line. He requested that the Dslam be reloaded or something like that and it's been allmost and hour now and my stats seems more stable than it has been in the last few weeks now.

Connected true
Operational Mode G.Dmt
Annex Type AnnexA
Upstream 512000
Downstream 4096000
SNR Margin(Upstream) 14 dB
SNR Margin(Downstream) 10.0 dB << This started from 6-8 and kept dropping
now goes 10-13
Line Attenuation(Upstream) 22.5 dB
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 44.0 dB
CRC Errors(Upstream) 123 << These used to go into 10-20 thousands in few minutes.
CRC Errors(Downstream) 0 << These used to go into 10-20 thousands in few minutes.

It's only been about an hour now, so to soon to tell, but the line noise seems allmost non existent now.
Also Jabulani said if it get worse again they gonna have to change some strip thing on the dslam or the other thing he said I'm running on Empangeni 2 they might have to move me to Empangeni 3 or something like that..

So even if it's goes bad this weekend again it looks like he knows or suspects what the problem is on my line..

My internet is fucked up big time.
1133005256.png

mweb 4mbps,it usually shows about 3.00mbps.

this is prob telscums fault, they prob tampered with my line again.fcking scumbags.

Oh why didn't i call them yesterday,it just had to happen on a friday.now i have to wait till monday for them to sort out this fckup.

well then i could understand if my line was down because of rain but rain doesn't magically downgrade your line to 300kbps.

My 4 Mbps line has been struggling to stay sync'ed at 1 Mbps for the last 10 days or so. Telkom says the line is fine and it's a POTS filter issue, so I tried a spare one and bought a new one, neither worked. I'm in Marina da Gama, CPT. Tried various ISPs, but it's a line issue. And no, the apparent 'nation wide' rain hasn't fallen in CPT.

Well I spoke to soon after about 2 - 2.5 hours the line started going completly mal again :(
At least Jabulani suspect something on the dslam being the problem, he said there is something he needs to check by the exchange, but it will only happen on monday, so will patiently wait for monday and after monday if it still giving problems I will just log another fault and request Telkom to send Jabulani again since he knows the setup here and what he thinks is wrong. So crossing fingers that my line will get sorted next week... at the latest, has been a month allready so it's way overdue...
