Edwe suggested this. I've also been playing around with this.

Last night I was getting disconnected almost every minute. I then opened a command prompt and typed ping www.cellc.co.za -t -l 2 and just let it run. I have not been disconnected since starting to run that.

Would appreciate more forumites' tests.

It is exist very old tool UOTrace - <100kb
One can ping any site and make continious poll
I am using this for many years.
It is running from one of the PC and continiously pinging cellc site. Parameters is 200ms delay and 16 bite packet.
No disconnections at all
Also you can see statisticks - % of packet loss and min/max ping time
Can perform traceroute and whois

I do sometimes get disconnections, but it hardly affects me because my software is set up to reconnect automatically. There is an option you can set in the dial-up properties to 'Redial if the line is dropped'. I also use MWconn to manage my connections and this tool can also detect connection problems and reconnect automatically. I never seem to get disconnections during actual data flow.

There is also an option within MWconn to do ping connection monitoring, but so far I have not needed to use this.

I have stuff to download in Feb so this tip is going to be helpful I guess. Does it use a lot of ram? My PC is really old. In the 56k modem days I used to be able to put a modem string in to stay connected on a bad line. s10=200 I don't know where you would find that option in this mobile software though or if it would even work.

Isn't this going to cause traffic on the Cell C site, sort of like a DOS attack? Just a thought? lol if it is.

It would, yes. But it's their problem. If they feel it's ok to drop my connection often, I will ping the crap of them.

O, o hope they don't send the popo to my house or something?

Is it just me or is the Cell C service, really great in the beginning of a month and then as the month gets longer the service, gets worse? Well I'll be able to put that theory to the test tomorrow.

Since running the ping, I was connected for 27 hours before getting disconnected the first time.

I have now gathered conclusive evidence that the ping works like a charm.

When I got home from work, I saw I had one disconnect today. I stopped my ping as it was being piped to a file and I wanted to check the responses over the whole day. After a few minutes, I saw I was disconnected. I also saw this post.
(Excuse the telegram style...)

Thought it was the router, so plugged in my E1820 directly on the pc, fired up MDMA. Disconnected every couple of minutes.
Starting pinging-> Did that for 20 minutes-> No disconnects.
Stopped pinging-> Disconnected on average every 3 minutes.
After 20 minutes of this crap, started pinging again-> Now connected already for 35 minutes. No disconnects!

EDIT: In all instances above I left the connection idle, except for the pings where applicable of course.

I'm running the ping constantly and I still timeout every few minutes. Tonight it's even worse - the timeouts are happening multiple times per minute.

It doesn't help to choose the "Redial if the line is dropped" option as my connection doesn't actually drop, it just times out for a random amount of time and then fixes itself temporarily.

That is different from what I'm seeing. Mine drops completely as in the MDMA's dial-up connection drops. For the last hour I've kept my eyes glued to MDMA and it seems to often disconnect when in the RAT window of MDMA, the HSPA+ changes to 3G (when no traffic flows). I've had one disconnect with the ping so far tonight, but several 10's of disconnects without it. Weird...

EDIT: I emailed Cell C informing them that I will be pinging them until further notice. They emailed back and said a technician will be contacting me. Hmmm.

this is no longer an issue for me ever since the network upgrade on 3rd March.....however the famous "connected but access to cellc website only" made an appearance for first time today since the network upgrade which obviously resulted in a hard disconnect and reconnect….hopes and prays this was a once off affair....
