So which is the clever option ?

I actually managed to track down an option for a 1920 X 1200 24" LCD, but I started getting some doubts.

First off I have always assumed all games also support the 1920 X 1200 resolution, but apparently they don't. Then also, even if they do now, how long will this still be the case, seeing as 1080 is all the rage nowadays. (stupid)

Secondly, will the slightly bigger resolution tax my graphics card, a radeon 4890, that much more ?

I am really quite hooked on the higher vertical resolution, I don't like staring through a letterbox.

Games are not the problem, letterboxing on movies is... for some people. I would get it.

1920x1200 sounds like it's for you. No it won't tax your graphics card that much more, you already have a really good card there. I've never come across a game recently that doesn't support 1920x1200. It is, after all, the "proper PC resolution".

As the previous poster mentioned, the only issue is letter-boxing, where you get black bars at the top and bottom with 16:9 media.

I use a 1920x1200 display, on a 4890 I never had problems maxing anything out. It is more demanding obviously - more pixels = more graphical requirements - but not so much I guess.

With movies etc I overscan usually - GOM has a nice feature where Shift +- increases/decreases screen without stretching. you can watch in 1080 but i dont mind cutting off the edges a bit.

I had a 226BW 1680x1050 (16:10) then went to a 24" 1920x1080 and hated the letterbox, even though it has more vertical res.

The other day I got a T260 and am loving it :D Perfect size and res.

Did you manage to find a new one or was it secondhand?

1920x1080 is 16:9, so it shouldn't have letterboxed?

2nd hand. I seriously doubt any new ones out there.

I don't mean letterbox like a tv with black bars etc. I'm using it for work not watching movies (have the 42" plasma for that :p).
I mean the feeling of looking through a narrow letter box. Like this:

RE all the 'letterboxing' VLC! When using VLC, change aspect ratio to 16:10 or whatever, and it will expand your movie to fit the screen. Shortkey is simply 'A'

Might stretch the characters a little, but that's preferable to having the letterbox...

Work just provided me with a 1366*786 or whatever POS. 15.6" screen with that res looks like toy. My phone is 800*480- when I hold that against the screen, the laptop looks stupid.

Bladdy corporate cost cutters

Got 2 1280x1024 "square" screens at work. They do the job pretty well. Not too wide when side by side. I had the 24 and 22 next to each other and was far too wide...

+1, +1, and +1 again. :)

There are some nice ips panel options for 16:10

:P

Indeed. Getting my paws on the HP ZR24 soon. 24" 16:10 IPS goodness. :D R4,500... But that's relatively small change for someone who uses the PC a lot. One of the main reasons I want IPS besides the better colour accuracy is because they're easier on the eyes.
