So I installed an MSI GTX470, loaded the drivers and utilities on the disk. I plugged in the cable to the mini-HDMI port on the card connected to HDMI on the monitor.

No signal, so I unplugged it out and in again and it gave a signal.

I browsed for a while and everything seemed normal. I was getting sound out of the monitor through the cable as well, which is what I wanted.

Now if I play Counterstrike at max resolution it's very very smooth. But after <10 minutes the game freezes up. The only way out is to reboot. Sometimes I see blockies on the screen after the reboot. I see from Afterburner, the temp is climbing at around 70 celcius.

I've tried uninstalling the driver and updating it.
I've also tried at lower resolutions with the same effect. It sometimes does it at idle.

Is it heat, settings, mini-HDMI port or some other issue like RAM?

I'm quite at a loss.

The PC is very cool at the moment with sandybridge, multiple fans and large cooler, so that isn't a consideration.

It seems Lounger is having problems with his new SB rig - from ordering the components - to assembling - to getting it to work. Eish

I feel like a pioneer. Everything else is humming ... (did I mention the baby Gekko trying to crawl into the case? :))

It's still under warranty, but not brand new.

Well is it 2ndhand or brought over from another system of yours? IOW did you see it working previously or is this your first exposure to it?

My guess is that the card requires a reflow. So you'll have to RMA it if it is still under warranty...

2nd hand via Postmanpot. It stops working under certain conditions. It's working now for browsing, but will freeze if I play a game for a while.

I suspect the port, but I don't have another cable to test.

i had exactly the same problem, it ended up being my ram.

Take some chips out one at a time, and in afterburner, click the reset button, you might also be pushing it too hard on the OC.

There are only two sticks, correctly seated. I'm not overclocking at all - just using it to check temps.
Which reset is that?

Are you also using the minHDMI port?

850W should be more than enuff (40A on 12V Rails).... mmmmm, maybe luxe's answer could be it?

I hope it is. I don't want to have to wait for a replacement. I've done enough waiting for a lifetime.

Ok look: it is not your psu. It is not your ram. It might be your motherboard, but most likely culprit is the 470. It doesn't sound like it's running hot, but it's almost definitely faulty.

Are either the Ram or Mobo new?

I am just relating that on my new pc build (using mini-hdmi out) i had EXACTLY the same issue, and it was one of my ram chips. I took that chip out, and never had the issue again. This is also after i went and swapped my GFX card (Asus 460) for a new one.

Doubt its your psu as well.

The PC is a new build. I tried swapping sticks of ram in various ways, but still got the freezing up. I tried another game and problem is the same. I did notice that I was able to play longer late last night though.

Odd, sounds like a fault with the card. Is it brand new?

±6 months old, bought from yeti through me. Stress tested in front of Lounger in yeti's PC.

I somehow doubt it's the card, but the only way to be sure would be to test it in another system, and stress test again.

Lounger, please run FurMark stress test, and let us now the results.

Worst case it'll have to be returned to Pinnacle for RMA. If Lounger doesn't want to do this, I'm sure yeti will. We are good, honest okes. ;)

If it was overheating you'd hear the fan going berserk. I had terrible artifacts with my 470 before crashing a few months ago but a re install of windows fixed that problem.
