Hundreds of people owe their lives to the fact that homeopathy is completely ineffective. This past weekend, groups of people around the world participated in an event that, at first glance, may seem sinister or even cult-like.

They gathered in 25 countries (in an event known as "The 10:23 Campaign") and took massive overdoses of medication -- not to harm themselves, but to prove a point. No one suffered ill effects because the medications were homeopathic, have no active ingredients, and are therefore worthless. Real drugs of proven efficacy can be dangerous or lethal in high enough doses; homeopathic remedies cannot.

This is not the first time that someone has tried to overdose on homeopathic medications. In January 2010 Alexa Ray Joel (daughter of Billy Joel) tried to overdose on a homeopathic medication in an apparent suicide attempt. She, also, was just fine.

Its a really dumb thing to do.... some of the homeopathic remedies do have active/toxic elements to them. You could get really sick.

so who is more stupid the ones OD-ing or the ones who use it normally. i would like to see the same thing done with a lekker valerian OD...

Homoeopathy Kills

And for those who ask, "what’s the harm?", you may direct your question to Thomas Sam and his wife Manju Sam, whose nine-month-old daughter died because of their homeopathic beliefs.

The infant girl, Gloria Thomas, died of complications due to eczema. Eczema. This is an easily-treatable skin condition (the treatments don’t cure eczema but do manage it), but that treatment was withheld from the baby girl by her parents, who rejected the advice of doctors and instead used homeopathic treatments. The baby’s condition got worse, with her skin covered in rashes and open cracks. These cracks let in germs which her tiny body had difficulty fighting off. She became undernourished as she used all her nutrients to fight infections instead of for growth and the other normal body functions of an infant. She was constantly sick and in pain, but her parents stuck with homeopathy. When the baby girl developed an eye infection, her parents finally took her to a hospital, but it was far too late: little Gloria Thomas succumbed to septicemia from the infection.

There are also cases of people who have died as a result of poor diagnosis or / and treatment by medical doctors.

never, we all know that conventional medicine are 100% safe :)

So when real medicine make a mistake people may die, but when homoeopathy "works" as intended people still may die.

Of course there are. However that doesn't mean that we need to resort to homeopathy, a practice that has been demonstrated time and time again to be absolute hogwash.

I'm very skeptical, but wont go so far as to totally write off homeopathy. I think it's unfair to do so.

Lol, I always wondered what would happen if you took a handful of Rescue tablets.

Go read the papers rejecting it. It has been demonstrated to be nonsense in labs multiple times since (iirc) the 70s.

I don't think it is responsible to overdose with homeopathic medicines. Homeopathic medicines still contain preservatives and such. They may also contain contaminants which are below the toxic threshold in prescribed doses but exceed the toxic threshold when taken in excess.

well, james randi has shown us countless times that it's impossible to overdose on homeopathic sleeping remedy.
homeopathic remedies contain none of the active ingredient, and 100% water (or alcohol apparently). what on earth are they preserving?
what are these contaminants you talk about?
(i'm talking strictly about homeopathic stuff here, not "herbal" remedies)

But at least they do not contain active ingredients. By contrast, meta-analyses show that SSRIs fail to outperform placebo yet they are toxic in overdose. Statistically Ray Joel would have been more likely to attempt suicide when taking an SSRI than when taking a homeopathic medicine, and with an SSRI she may have suffered serious sequelae unlike what she did with her homeopathic medicine.

thanks. your personal crusade was noted in the other thread. please initiate a class action law suit or sue somebody. there's already a system in place to deal with big pharma lying to people.
and you can take big pharma on about their claims, because their claims are substantial - not vague, nebulous and subjective.

I remember taking those to calm myself down for a drivers test, they do nothing :/

this is a common misconception. in some people (due to their metabolism and other factors) rescue remedy works slower than in others. this is the case with many homeopathic remedies.
in your case, any amount of factors could have contributed toward this - is your birthday in the second half of the year or the first? would you say that you're larger or smaller than the average person?
any of these factors could influence the onset of the remedy in your body.
you may have noticed that after you took the test, or even later in the day (possibly late in the evening), you may have felt more relaxed and at ease.
this is a sure sign that it worked but that the timing was a bit off...

/how am i doing here guys :D
