The DA Youth expressed concern over the budget allocation of R1.22 billion to the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) over the next three years

"The National Youth Development Agency has been nothing more than an ANC Youth League exercise in cadre deployment and wasteful expenditure since its inception on 16 June 2009. Its ANC-dominated executive earns a combined income of more than R11 million a year, with Steven Ngubeni, NYDA CEO and ANC YL Secretary General, earning more than a cabinet minister, at R1.8 million per year," says the youth.

The NYDA was recently responsible for wasting R100 million on the World Festival of Youth and Students – an ANC Youth League event which ended up being a week of partying and drinking for radical youth organisations from around the world.

"The DA Youth has called repeatedly for the NYDA to be disbanded and the budget redirected to projects that will have a real impact on youth development, such as a zero-rating of VAT on textbooks," says the youth.

It argued that if the NYDA was making any notable progress on the youth development crisis, this R1.22 billion budget would be welcomed and justifiable; however, in light of the fact that the organisation has met just 23 of its 68 targets over the last financial year – that’s a 33% success rate – it seems highly likely that this budget will turn into yet another exercise in gross financial wastage while millions of young South Africans remain jobless and skill-less

Agree, this is a total wast of taxpayers money.

its like the DA has some sense. The ANC... Rape the taxpayer, spend the money becoming a fat cat, and screw what we where supposed to do.

We can only dream. Do any other countries do this? No VAT/Sales tax on Books?

Yes many. Many countries have no VAT fullstop and a great number that do have VAT put a 0% on things commonly used by students like textbooks. I really wanted 0% VAT on my textbooks after I went through university and experienced paying hundreds of rands for a single book. It really isn't affordable as a student and really how much extra money can the government possibly be gathering from such a tiny subsection of books.

If they dont have VAT, they have sales tax. Tax is inevitable.

Yes tax is inevitable but some places seem to get on fine with minimal tax. I would much prefer an increase in VAT or a sales tax instead and a massive drop in income tax. Tax consumption not production people!

Meanwhile the DoL does not have funds available for NRF Scarce Skills Scholarships.

Nor does the DoE have money to pay part time teachers, so they just sacked 6000 of them. Also all the teachers who DIDN'T strike, also had no-work-no-pay money deducted from their salaries, stating "The onus is on them to prove they worked, but we cannot guarantee they will be refunded this year."
