I'm thinking of changing from Vodacom prepaid to Cell C prepaid.

My Vodacom signal in my area has deteriorated, so I popped a Cell C sim card in my cellphone to test and I get full signal with Cell C. (Voice and 3G)

I want to keep my 082 XXX XXXX number, cause of my clients and business cards.

Is it possible to port my 082 number exactly as it is to Cell C?

According to the following info from Cell C, I can get the same last 7 digits (If available) but my first numbers will change to 084.

Can I switch from my existing network to Cell C?

Of course you can. Cell C stands for choice and the choice is yours.
Your phone number will change to an 084 number but you can choose to have the other seven digits remain the same, if the number is still available.
It's so easy. Just visit your nearest Cell C outlet to make it happen.

If this is the case, why bother offering it? The whole point of porting a number is to keep it the same. If just one digit changes, I might as well jus change the number. Try calling them to get a clear view on what they mean.

Yes you can port your number and keep all 10 digits the same, It's called MNP and is extremely easy to do with prepaid.

Nice howto on Cell C's website http://www.cellc.co.za/services/mobile-number-portability

Just follow that and you can't go wrong, remember the 1st step is crucial that Cell C sim card you buy and RICA must not be used until the porting process has been completed this is crucial, so do not be tempted and open that starter pack early...

Then why do they say "Your phone number will change to an 084 number but you can choose to have the other seven digits remain the same, if the number is still available"?

Which info is right? I don't want to take this risk until I am absolutely sure that I keep my 10 digits exactly the same.

Thanks for the info/help so far!

@OP, that info is obviously outdated. The whole point of MNP is that you keep your number. Anywhooo in the zooo, I just told Trevaaaaaaaa

I officially ported my Vodacom number to Cell C today.

I followed the instructions from the Cell C site and starter pack. Very easy....

Buy any Cell C starter pack and do NOT open it

RICA your SIM card

SMS #portme#serialnumber#

(note: this is the serial number of your new Cell C SIM) to 084 767 8287 from your MTN, Vodacom or Virgin Mobile SIM card

You will receive two confirmation SMS’s within two hours on your MTN, Vodacom or Virgin Mobile SIM

Wait 24 hours until your MTN, Vodacom or Virgin Mobile SIM card stops working

Then you can insert your new Cell C SIM card and recharge to start making calls

Took less than 6 hours to port. Still got my 082 number and full Cell C signal in my area.

Cell C gained a customer and Vodacom lost another... Thanks guys!

Prepaid porting is so easy now days. It involves a sms and you get ported to another network. :)

I also ported from Vodacom to Cell C. It is as easy as the others in this thread say and you keep the same number.

I ported yesterday to Cell C from Vodacom. I went into the shop and a Cell C rep did it for me. I got the following sms from Cell C,

1. Thank you for your request to port to us...
2. Thank you for giving us your details for Rica...
3. Welcome to Cell C family. Your number is ________ (which is my vodacom number) Please recharge to activate your account. Cell C

My Vodacom sim is still working and I'm receiving calls on Vodacom. When must I put in my Cell C sim?

On Cell C's website it states the following,

"Wait 24 hours until your MTN, Vodacom or Virgin Mobile SIM card stops working.
Then you can insert your new Cell C SIM card and recharge to start making calls"

But the sms I got said the following,

"Welcome to Cell C family. Your number is ________ (which is my vodacom number) Please recharge to activate your account. Cell C"

So which is it, do I wait for my vodacom sim to stop working or do I put in my Cell C sim and recharge to activate my account?
