Nvidia GTX 590 announced: local pricing and availability investigated

Why would someone pay R6600 +- when you could buy two 6950s for R5500 +- and get better performance.

Several reasons.
1. takes up only one PCI-E slot meaning those with single slot mobos aren't left out
2. takes up only one PCI-E slot meaning those that want to employ a second card for auxiliary acceleration purposes on dual PCI-E slot mobos are able to do so
3. if you win the lotto you can grab another one and run them in SLI/Crossfire
4. in nVidia's case, dual-GPU card as primary with lesser card as physx/cuda secondary

Going the dual-card route isn't always necessarily better, but given the overall 'exclusivity' of cards like these for the price/performance ratios they have, they are more often than not senseless buys.
Then you get cards like this, which make a whole lot more sense.


Also, to whoever wrote the article, you need to keep in mind that out of the gates, historically, virtually all graphics cards have provided significantly inferior performance in comparison to when their drivers have been optimized. The HD6990 has been out for a weeks now and as such may have a drivers-based advantage, never mind patches based advantage for games where the HD6990 may have done abnormally poorly, as the GTX590 has done remarkably poorly on some benchmarks across various sites' tests.

Errr, just because "he" can. If a person can spend R30 000 on a pc... why not. I mean, what person in their right mind would spend R10 000 just on a 980X i7 cpu?

Why on earth would you want a card that has a longer lifespan, when you can pay less for a cheaper card and be able to upgrade again when newer technology comes out?

Your 7K card should be able to play every game for the next 4-5 years with awesome graphics, but by that time a new DX version would've been released and so on.
