African New Dawn satellite to launch today

Well, I bet a explosion is the only thing which can save Multichoice now :D

Does this have *any* impact on us South Africans?

We've already got fiber broadband, so nobody will be interested in sat.

We have fiber broadband? i thought Telkom was still playing with their copper lines.
Businesses do. You're right though, it was a poor choice of words. I meant the undersea fiber cables...they outperform sat links in pretty much every way.

Any idea what the speed and cost is like?
Generally sat links have massive throughput but also massive lag. i.e. Its unsuitable for anything besides downloading. Cost...not sure...about the same as a high end business ADSL a/c I think.

First launch aborted

Cryogenic engine checks were not conclusive during ignition, causing the solid boosters to not engage.
