The problem:
i got a customers laptop and the screen is cracked. Its a hp pavilion dv3510nr.
Now common sense would be to connect an external monitor to reset the password on the account via booting my usb stick and running nt password remover program:)
But this is no easy task as the external monitor only kicks in once windows come to the logon screen to enter the password.
This is a definite fail on hp's side:wtf:

I cannot even go into the bios or check anything on boot.
Solution:
The system is vista and i really need a way to use the external monitor on boot.Is there no automated program that can wipe the password protected account just by booting from usb.
It would be great if there was a app that could be a universal password reset from usb on the logon(users) screen.

How can i force the laptop to use the external screen first.PLease dont tell me fn key and f4 as this only works at the log on screen of the os,when the pc boots these keys have no effect:(I guess its a driver thing from nvidia:cry:

So what can i do in this situation

I have never tried this but try going into safe mode by pressing f8 while the laptop is booting, press enter to enter safe mode and see if the 2nd screen turns on. Good luck.

WindowsGate on the Hiren CD should work - but it depends on the version of Vista as it has not always worked for me

You have to enable the external via fn+F4 during bootup (Think it's F4, else look for the key with the image of a screen on it, should be one of the F keys)

If that does not work use a linux livecd.

If you only need to get in to recover files then ponders live cd suggestion is the way to go, it will boot to external monitor.

pls see post #3
I wouldnt have written it if it wasnt going to be helpful.

The Fn + F4 doesnt work properly on my HP laptop either...to my horror when i was trying to do a presentation at a clients place.
Does yours have an Nvidia chipset also?

How are you connecting to the external screen...you can probably connect it using HDMI or S-Video instead?

u sure it is booting?

plug the hard drive into another machine (sata so even a pc if u like) and run a password recovery tool off a cd then plug back before it boots off drive on pc and causes unhappy activation screens?

I would do the following (was in a hurry last try).

Take the laptop drive out and stick it in another pc.

Use one of the many password reset tools out there to reset the password.

plug it back in and turn it on.

Most laptops have a FN+xxx key where you can switch between an external monitor or the laptop display without having to boot up.
