HP ProLiant MicroServer

Eish, I wonder how many were sold in SA to date... I personally bought 2 :)
Based on what I've seen online they sold loads of them here, in the UK and in Australia. It seemed like everyone and their dog bought at least one.

I'll check tonight. Will stop SysFan with finger and see if that solves it. I have other 120mm fans in other systems that aren't as loud I have the guide for fan replacement too: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1193-page7.html

Sounded like PSU to me. I think it's running @ full speed, where it should calm down after boot up.

Measured sound: 41dBA. Phone placed on top of box, so it's not the standard of 1m or whatever is used. I still think that's too loud. There is no discernible decrease in sound from powering on onwards. One would expect fans to run full speed for a second or two, then slow down to a reasonable level. This isn't happening in my case :(

Have called HP- they need my part numbers etc, so they can quote on replacement parts. They're not sure yet if this is under warranty. I at least want a ticket number so when this PSU dies prematurely, I have some fall-back argument.

Any ideas otherwise?

Have you taken it to Let Me Repair, M5 Business Park?

I'm still under the 7 day period. Hoping HP can sort me out first- will give those okes a try otherwise. Might take mobo out, check all PSU pins and fan connectors are seated correctly first.

I was looking forward to an unbox plug in and go silent server :(

Still can't believe the price :)

They are the authorised HP warranty/repair agents.

Use 7 day period while you have it if you ask me. :)

The nice part of Greyhole is that your redundancy level is determined on a per share basis. Thus, for my Movies share, I have NO redundancy, while for my family photos I can have N redundancy. And for some work documents I can have one extra copy.

I hear you, and as Boomstomp said it's all about your requirements.

I wanted at least some level of protection for my media (spent a ****load of time cleaning it up, scraping cover-art, nfo's, etc.) but it's too much data to do a 2x (Greyhole's minimum). So here unRAID works better as it includes all the advantages of Greyhole (not hardware dependant, etc.)

For my critical stuff, I do like the idea of running 3-times or 4-times and this unRAID cannot do. So I have to do automated backups.

Let's say you've got 6TB data with no protection required and 1TB critical.

With Greyhole you'd need 6+1+1TB of storage - practically 4x2TB disks
With unRAID you'd need 6+1TB storage + 2TB parity - practically 5x2TB disks + 1TB off-line.

Now let's say you've got 6TB data with some protection required and 1TB critical.

With Greyhole you'd need 6+6+1+1TB of storage - practically 7x2TB disks
With unRAID you'd need 6+1TB storage + 2TB parity - practically 5x2TB disks + 1TB off-line.

Now let's say you've got 15TB data with some protection required and 1TB critical. (;))

With Greyhole you'd need 15+15+1+1TB of storage - practically 16x2TB disks
With unRAID you'd need 15+1TB storage + 2TB parity - practically 9x2TB disks + 1TB off-line.

Well started the process of restoring my little N36, collecting the gt520, 8gb ram and 2x2Tb's today for the other 2.

So I wanted to restart the entire VM setup, but I wasn't keen on doing the entire ubuntu+sickbeard+sabnzbd custom config over.

I tried the option of exporting it as a virtual appliance(over the weekend) and last night - I re-deployed my VM appliance(being my ubuntu download rig) it took about 5 hours over the network, but this morning the machine was started up and running, exactly in the state I had left it and ready to commence its primary d/l functions.

Needless to say , I was happier than ever.

So the next phases for my n36 will be : try to configure the vRDM's to get "fake direct passthrough" enabled on the N36(this for my 4x2Tb's installed in the machine - I need this to provide accessible storage for the different VM's I intend on running on it.

Configure new smoothwall vm app

Setup 2nd n36 as htpc running xbmc/openelectv (2gb ram, 4gb usb micro + gt520)

3rd unit Configure as backup NAS/SAN (8gb ram,5x2Tb) my OS options are varied, I have access to the entire M$ OS portfolio(via Technet) and the range of unraid/freenas/nexentastor community edition, openindiana and the like.

So any recommendations on the OS to run on my NAS/SAN?

I already have an existing WHS v1 setup with 8x2Tb for the bulk of my media, it has run out of space I have about a 1Tb spare on this setup, hence my need to expand.

Found some extra reading material on the subject : http://blackundertone.wordpress.com/tag/rdm/

How are you finding performance of your machines in VMWare on this platform? Is the CPU not a tad lacking?

With vmware tools installed on the client, I havent had any real hassles or issues.

I am able to browse, download(via sabnzbd, sickbeard running in the background) without too much of an issue. As well as copy over.

When my Ps3 died, pulled out one of my little network media players, this one can access samba shares, and there I was streaming from my ubuntu vm catching up with the latest goodies I downloaded, without having to move it to the whs box to share and stream from there.

I really can't complain so much about performance, yes its not blistering, but I haave nto experienced the frustartion of being forced to go do some chores and then come back to find it finally running, what I need it to.

My microserver, is a model VM appliance host.

Thanks! So essentially for headless app servers VMs it's workable.

Cool. Let me know if it works

Sent from my Desire HD using MyBroadband Android App

Well it appears I have achieved some semblance of success on the Fake "direct passthrough" I used a 2tb drive loaded it with 40gb's of data(as a means to test) and followed the steps as set out on here : RDM mapping of local SATA storage for ESXi and it worked for me.

I added my newly created RDM to my ubuntu download vm as a means to test, restarted it and I can now safely access the data on that disk, no hassles - the experimentation will continue.

Copied 8.5gb from my Ubuntu VM Disk to the RDM Sata Disc and it was quite snappy.

Awesome!!!

On OpenELEC, i'm stuck on this screen:
install-ss-5.png

It's like my USB Keyboard doesn't work in the OpenELEC Installation (it works in the HP BIOS Though) - I press enter but nothing happens.

anyone had this problem before? what keyboard do i need to install OpenELEC?

Copy speed between drives inside the server is very slow (8mb/s to 10mb/s)

I've got a small issue with my HP micro-server and am trying to figure out what's wrong, if anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them. I have ubuntu 11.04 on (dual boot with windows 8 preview but not really important I don't think) that's on the included 250GB (ext4 format) then I have a 1TB (NTFS western digital green power) and a 1.5 TB ( NTFS samsung). I also have a 2TB samsung G3 (NTFS) external plugged in. All are mounted and shared over the network (gigabit switch). I can copy from any of the drives to an external windows machine (ssd) at decent speeds, no complaints there but if I copy something from 1 drive inside the server to another inside the server I get a max of 8 - 10 mb/s. I do seem to have less of an issue when I am copying to or from the small 250 GB.

Anyone have any advice?

Thanks.

Strange, I used a small benq usb keyboard yesterday to complete my openelec install, no issue.

Ok, so i bought a cheap keyboard and got everything installed. Boot time 34 seconds. (openelec)

So now, how do i edit xbmc's files? I need to access the filesystem...

Will windows read the openelec hard drive if i put it in my pc?

Must i use this "samba" u guys talking about, or something like filezilla? Whats the easiest route here, im a total linux noob.

also, is it possible to skip the bios message in the post, to press f10/f12? Id like to speed bootup even more if possible

Most of the openelec directories will be visible on your PC as samba shares.

Or you can telnet / ssh to it as root/openelec.

Instead of switching the openelec box and booting up, maybe just hibernate it?
