HP ProLiant MicroServer

Or use Ember Media Manager to scrape (I found it more manageable than the XBMC scrapers).

As was posted before, set movie directory content to "movies". Now you can change the layout of your library - there are many options re. covers, fanart, plot etc.

And of course you can sort to unwatched.

Hey lads. Got the Proliant Server..thanks MHC for speedy delivery. Installed Xbmcbuntu to the hard drive without issues. Cant pick up the sound though..not sure if there is a setting that needs to be adjusted in xbmc itself. The onboard gfx card struggles a bit with 720p..was just testing it out (My GT520 hasn't arrived yet). Gonna test out OpenElec as well to compare. Running the stock standard N36L...sole purpose as a HTPC (High def mkvs mostly).

CPU Usage seems high when idle..I could be wrong. :erm:

CPU usage will be high without a GPU as that little CPU has to render everything.

Im not running any gfx card. Its just a dl pc not using it as a htpc yet. Just cant hit 1080P. Wierd thing iis it says 1920x1080 when I remote into it.

Another thing is that despite changing the onboard video mem to 64/128/256 in the bios. it still shows as 16mb in windows.

Don't want to get a gfx card just yet but might just have to.

I am also going to install WHS2011 as Server 2008 R2 is overkill
My one is working great I connected the Samsung 550 Tv to the GIG switch and WHS saw it strait away and I can select any thing on the shared folders in WHS from the Samsung remote control no software needed

You need to enable the system menu in the skin settings for the re focus skin.

You will not get sound as that Hp does not have a sound card. Hence you get a video card with hdmi to handle sound and video.

I am 80% of the way done with creating a Win7 Ultimate x64 USB boot key and going to load this along with Plex on my HP. This XBMC stuff is cr@p. Fiddle here, tweak there, script this, log that... Sorry. I want to watch movies. Not stuff around.
I am so annoyed that I actually wasted a portion of my life creating an XBMC Ubuntu USB key and installed it. What turned me right off was the file browser to access movies and no sound over HDMI on the GT210. On my HP upstairs I have Win7 Ultimate with a GT210 and EVERYTHING works. Machine is solid as a rock.

Install windows. Load drivers. Load Plex. Watch movies. All works. Sorted :)

@Mike you an avid/converted PLEX user , in order for you to test XBMC you have to be open minded and stop trying to find something wrong with XBMC/ubuntu once installed and running properly then start with your critique on what’s missing e.t.c .I’ve read your post with yourself and keeper :)

I have gone back and tried it a few times.
If I were not open minded, that would not have happened. :)
I am looking for what you guys see in it. Each time I wonder why you don't use plex.
Trust me, I don't walk around with blinkers on and am not loyal to any brand. I like to use what I think is best for the task at hand.
IMO, Plex has a lot over XBMC.

There has to be a reason why Samsung and LG are licensing Plex - and not XBMC - for their newer model TVs.

The only thing I can see that XBMC has over Plex is its appliance like setups. The Linux version is in testing though, so that will not be an issue soon.

I'll try out Plex as soon as they release a Linux frontend, otherwise I can't comment on which is better.

Hi. I got EDEN beta 2 installed on my MS. 2 drives with data. 1 Toshiba 1.5tb and 2) WD 2TB i took out of a WD essential . The toshiba drive picked up first time and i was able to play movies etc. I afterwards put the WD drive in but i cannot see the drive anywhere.
To check if the drive is connected properly i tried a fresh install with just the 2tb in the machine and it picked the drive up asking if i wanted to install on that drive. Any ideas ?Thanks

Nothing wrong with XBMC, from a PC UI perspective Plex Media Center and XBMC 11 are very similar, I'd say like 80% of the code is shared. Personally I find PMC's presentation a little more polished (having tried most of popular PMC & XBMC skins), but then XBMC's extendibility has the edge with a lot more diverse add ons.

The real difference is XBMC's full capabilities start & end with the PC the front-end is installed on. Plex on the other hand strips all the media source, scraping & storage (metadata & playback memory) out of the (PMC) front-end and shifts it to a separate local or remote server process (Plex Media Server or PMS) accessible via IP (XML data interchange, http media streaming & web media mgmt UI).

This allows multiple PC front-ends to share the same independent media/metadata store without any additional config (clients auto-discover the PMS server over LAN). Additionally since the media/metadata store is independent, other non-PC clients are able also able to share in the same rich media UI experience (and there are many diverse ones available for all types of TVs/BD players/phones/pads/STBs etc.).

So in essence if all you're looking for is a one box (PC) solution, XBMC is the best out there, but as soon as your needs expand to a multi-room, multi-device type scenario, Plex is the clear choice.

I'll try out Plex as soon as they release a Linux frontend, otherwise I can't comment on which is better.
While there isn't an official PMC download package (binary), the source is available to compile. Check out the the relevant section on the Plex forums.

Installed MS WHS over the weekend with XBMC Eden and the Sickbeard + SABnzbd setup.

Wanted to do OpenELEC but my gfx card unfortunately is not supported. But I'm not disappointed, this works out well for me. Don't always have my laptop at home so can use this for basic browsing as well with the wireless Logitech keyboard and mouse.

Next step is trying out Milkman's guide and getting more harddrives.

Shot for everyone's help with everything so far. Very impressed with the results.

why is it so hard to find skins for PLEX dont like the mediastream.

so far its looking good :)

Did the latest update of OpenElec now I cannot see network/ Samba shares. Will check in the morning again.

Hi guys, I intend to go the microserver route and have been following the thread on NZBs as well. I am ready to set myself up a nice media center.

I've looked at the HPshop which is going for R1499, but are there any other place where I may get it at the cheaper price? Also the one from the HPshop comes with HD, I would like to purchase this separately.

Please assist
