Who must RICA?
RICA affects everyone. It affects all customers including new and existing Pay as you go or Contract customers. This includes telemetry SIM cards in tracking devices and data SIM cards used in smartphones, laptops, modems, etc. You need to register ALL your SIM cards in your household, so don't forget your children's, parents and domestic workers SIM cards in your family.

How to check your RICA status
To check whether your SIM cards are in fact RICA compliant, the cellular providers have made various options available.

Vodacom
Vodacom has also made various other channels available to check RICA compliance, including:
1. SMS the word: RICA to 31050 - this is a free sms
2. Call 111 / 082 111.
3. At any Vodacom store.
4. Via @vodacom111 on Twitter.

MTN
MTN subscribers can check their RICA status on the http://www.mtn.co.za/MTNServices/RICA/Pages/Overview.aspx go to the quick search
section or call MTN RICA centre on 083 123 7422

8ta
A Telkom spokesperson explains that the 8ta mobile service can only be provided to customers who have complied with and completed the RICA process.
“If the customer has access to the 8ta service they applied for, they can safely assume that the RICA process has been completed,” 8ta said.
“Customers who have provided all the relevant details required for the RICA process, but who have not yet received access to the 8ta service, may check at their point of application (e.g. Telkom Direct stores) to establish whether their RICA application process has been successfully completed or not.”

Cell C
Cell C customers can call the Cell C call centre on 140 (from a Cell C number) or 084 140 from any other number to find out if they are registered. They can also visit a Cell C store and ask a sales consultant to check on the system if they are registered.

Virgin Mobile
Virgin Mobile customers can dial *124# from their Virgin Mobile phone and receive an SMS confirming whether or not they are RICA compliant.

If you haven't yet ... you can register your SIM cards for free by visiting a cellular shop or other outlets selling SIM cards - present your green ID document and proof of residence together with all your SIM cards. You've got time until 31 June 2011.

I am RICA'd ... on second thoughts that sounds positively awful :wtf:

What if i don't have a bill, the only things i got are an electronic telkom bill and pre-paid electricity card.

Edit,

For FICA i cannot use an electronic telkom bill, is this the same for RICA?

You can go to a Police Station and get them to provide confirmation of address for you.

Any bill or account with a physical address will do.

Vehicle Licence will also have your physical address but NOT a driving licence...

MTN customers can now use *131# SEND and choose option 4

Will an electronic version work? So print it out and stuff?

I think it would need to look identical to the postal version!

One trick is to go to your chemist and order something small "on account" pay the account and get a receipt with your address on it!

The problem with RICA is that the guidelines on what is acceptable as proof of address is at best vague... Therefore it is left to the RICA agent to interpret what is acceptable as proof... I get a lot of people who have been rejected elsewhere because their municipal account is addressed to a PO Box number despite their address actually being shown in the property box!

If you get hassle and one place just try another outlet...

It should look exactly the same, I will even fold it. :)

Edit

How about a bank statement that was posted to me?

I RICA'd my number with Vodacom in the middle of last year and later received an sms to confirm this. A while later I thought I'll check to see if I was indeed RICA'd, after reading an article on the internet, and sent and sms to 31050 which in turn replied with confirmation that I was indeed RICA'd (I still have the sms's to confirm this). After reading this thread this morning and listening to the radio station warning people that they will be cut off if they haven't RICA'd, Ithought I'll check again by sending off an SMS. I've just received an sms syaing that my number is not registered and that I have to go to my nearest Vodacom outlet. So what has happened to my details?

My mtn numbers not rica'd either. But i have gone thru the process last year.
And when at the Mtn store when doing queries or payments they check on system & it was rica'd
Now on the online check it not.

A bank statement is fine as are most other such statements but the must be less than three months old...

I have a MTN SIM with a number that was ported from Virgin Mobile. This shows as RICA'ed on my system (I'm a RICA agent) but *131# says that I am not! I have tried to re-RICA the SIM but it will not allow this, I can RICA a new SIM and transfer my number if needs be... Try *131*4# and if it's not shown as registered I'd suggest a call to 173 or a trip to your local MTN store...
