Anybody bought the LA32D550 ?

Ok so let me get this right,.. I must use this SPDIF port on my DSTV decoder and connect it to this converter thing....then from there connect it to the Optical Digital audio In in the Blue ray player? What cables do I require?

If I do this will I get surround sound from movies on DSTV? and Will I be able to use the 5.1 speakers for DSTV in general? will it just play out the front two speakers or all of them?

Also the HD PVR is unfortunately out of the question, my banker refuses to pay the extra R60 for the hd channels. :(

Also I don't understand what you mean by the Dolby Pro-Logic and I take it HTB is the Blue ray player correct?

Yes two cables. Any normal RCA-RCA plug cable between the SPDIF port on decoder to converter, optical cable from converter to optical port on HTB

Yes all 5 + subwoofer if the movie is broadcast in Dolby Digital 5.1

The extra R60 p/m is to activate the 2nd tuner in the HDPVR, you are already paying for the HD channels with the Premium bouquet. You can opt not to pay the R60, but anything that uses the 2nd tuner will be inoperative; recording, Catchup, BoxOffice.

DPL is a feature in your HTB that can up-mix any 2 ch stereo audio source to 5.1 ch. Signal processing isolates certain audio types/frequencies and steers them to specific speakers e.g. voice->center, background rain/clapping->satellite etc.

Not the same as true DD5.1 from source, but it should allow you to experience (pseudo surround) audio from all your speakers. Check manual on how to activate.
 
Awesome thank you for all your help, just going to do the pseudo surround option for now which is currently working. :)

Once you're running audio exclusively through SPDIF, you will get the best of both worlds (if everything setup right). The digital data coming down the SPDIF cable not only includes raw audio data, but also control identification data.

So when the decoder is showing something with a 2 ch soundtrack the HTB will detect it and engage DPL for pseudo surround. However once a program with a DD5.1 soundtrack starts the HTB should detect this and seamlessly switch over to true 5.1 DD surround as is being broadcast.

I would still say yes, the 6 HD channels alone are worth it. Their quality is so much better at 1080i resolution using HDMI interconnection to the TV. Once the IS-20 satellite goes up halfway through this year, we should get some more HD channels.

The SD channels also get a picture improvement as they're upscaled to 1080i too.

So are you sure that if I choose not to pay the extra R60p/m then I will still be able to view those HD channels? I thought the R60p/m was to get the HD channels. Will contact DSTV about it just to make sure.

The R60 is for multi-channel access... Which means it's for XtraView and PVR functionality, where you are actually viewing and recording different things at the same time. The HD channels are still free at the moment.
 
So i have updated my LA32D550 with latest firmware 1020, am now looking for someone who can help me with picture settings for a bright room (light coming from large window) watching distance 2m
 
Where can I get the LA32D550 for R3499? Game has it for R3799 at the moment not sure if they had it on special again for R3499 and 190 posts is a bit much to go through :p (Only started looking at TVs this year as well)?

Also, when connecting it to a PC does it display the text clearly or is it blurred? A friend of mine got a Telefunken 37" 1080p for R3k from Game, great for movies and games but the text in Windows was blurred unless the resolution was changed to 1366x768.

Looking to get one of these to replace my ageing 2333SW.

Crystal clear, from 90cm+ back. You don't want to use it closer than 90cm - 1m though. If you check through this thread I've posted pics (albeit C550), Grimspoon also posted pics IIRC (D550).

Really, don't worry about it. Perfect PC monitor!
 
Are you pulling my leg? Went through the whole thread and couldn't find those pics >.<

If the Postman says it's great as a PC monitor then it must be true :p

Now to wait for it to go on special, only a saving of a few hundred but that will go towards a wall mount bracket.
 
I just bought the Sony 32CX520. I so wanted the Sammy 40D550 but could not get stock on short notice. Anyway I am happy about the performance so far.
