Hey

I recently did the whole hp microserver + ubuntu + xbmc thing and moved over the content from my Mede8er. Problem is of course that I had a whole lot of stuff marked as watched on the Mede8er so I've made a little perl script that connects to your XBMC movies database directly and updates stuff as watched if the Mede8er watched indicator exists for that file.

If anyone else has the same problem let me know, because maybe it's just me...

As a matter of interest, why did you do this route i.e. ditch the mede8er in favour of the microserver?

The mede8er doesn't use the internet for anything except internet radio. To scrape and generate stuff you need to run a program on a pc on your media etc and then the output is basically a jpg for fanart and then a jpg showing the details of the movie.
I had issues with it freezing when copying data over the network etc. Possibly sorted by a format and firmware update but I didn't feel like messing around with it etc. Also some issues with the NAS/Samba service not always picking up drives, not always running etc with earlier firmwares.
Because XBMC uses the internet and xml data usefully you can sort/search by a whole lot more things (rating/genre/added/etc). When you view info on a movie you can view the actors, select an actor and it can show you what other movies they are in etc.
Mede8er only takes one drive, and has one usb port after the other one is used up by the wifi. HP MS has space for 4/5 drives and 7 usb ports (1 internal, 4 front, 2 rear). While you can use a usb hub it would get messy.
A PC platform just offers more flexibility. As such I'm using it as a bit of a NAS box as well for backups. My tv has a web browser but it sucks using it with no keyboard/mouse so with XBMC on ubuntu I can just exit XBMC and use a real browser (with the mini keyboard thing from esquire).

Also a pity that new mede8er is more expensive than a brand new laptop. Does not make sense then to continue for mede8er until they deliver more value. Also PDF/EBook support.

Hmmm, new mede8er with wifi, but without HDD seems to go for around R2400.

HP microserver is R1200, with 250gb HDD.

Wonder why the mede8er is so expensive, considering it's practically a "throw away" item when the new version is released?

Hi rorz0r,

I've made the same move as you... I like the fact that xbmc does all the scrapping on its own and the way it sorts media from different sources.. I used the OpenELEC build installed on a USB stick with all my media on 2 other NAS devices..

Please let me know how I can move the watched indicators over onto xbmc..

Hi,
Where can I buy one of these HP microserver for R1200

Hi

Just joined have the same problem you had, I discovered xbmc and use two mede8er box, am running the xbmc with Pi, could I ask you to please forward the scripted you have wrote for the watched transfer to xbmc. Just got into this type of thing at 60+.
Thanks for work put in Frank

You didn't need to write a new script afaik. You could have just exported the video library into a single file and imported it into the new box...
