Best way to start up a new battery?

So Vodacom Direct outdid themselves and the Desire S arrived this morning. I've heard (and Googled) a thousand different opinions on how to best start up a new battery. Anyway, at the moment it is off and on charge from the wall socket.

How long should I let it charge before I turn it on?

The charge the batteryfor 16 hours before use story is an old wives tale - at least its become one, back in the stone age of cellphones thats what you needed to do :)
best to use the phone out of the box untill its flat and then charge it untill its full (probaly 45 minutes to an hour or so depending on the phone) not that 16 hours crap

New batteries are shipped partially charged. Before you start using your phone, it is recommended that you install and charge the battery. Some batteries perform best after several full charge/discharge cycles.

then only charge it till the phone is full, any longer and its just a waste, and yes only after about 4 or 5 full charge / discharges cyclyes does it perfom at optimal
Edit: did you RTFM im sure the best answer is there on how long to initiall charge the batery and i garuntee theres no over night 16 hours story

The "charge for 16 hours" is a historic hangover from NiCad batteries, I can't think of a post 1995 handset that has used this type of battery!

The reason some outlets perpetuate this historic charge routine is to get the user to read the manual while they wait 16 hours...

The correct method is to charge to full and for the first three charge cycles run the battery flat before charging. After this, it's use and abuse at will... :)

All the manual says about the battery is: Use the supplied power adapter and USB cable to charge your phone.

This does seem to be the most prevalent suggestion and the method I am adoption. Also, for the 1st 3 charges I'm keeping the phone off while charging.

Keeping the phone off whilst charging does speed up the process a little bit and of course stops the temptation to play with the new toy! :)

Even used batteries (that may have been sitting around for a while) get a "boost" from the run-flat three times then charge cycle!

Even though Li-ion batteries have almost zero "memory" problems associated to Ni-Cad batteries, they still benefit from a "workout" once in a while!
 
Pardon me being a little OT, is the huge price difference between 'OEM' and generic batteries warranted?
