Government on Thursday announced that commuter taxis and buses approved by authorities will not have to pay toll fees to travel on Gauteng's highways.

Cabinet also approved the final tolls for various types of vehicles travelling between Johannesburg and Pretoria.

Government spokesman Jimmy Manyi said tariffs on light motor vehicles (Class A2) will decrease from 49.5 cents to 40 cents per kilometre. Medium vehicles (Class B) have been adjusted from 149 to 100 cents per kilometre.

Cabinet has approved reduced toll tariffs for the Gauteng freeway improvement project phase A1, spokesman Jimmy Manyi said on Thursday.

Motorcycles would pay 24 cents a kilometre, light motor vehicles 40 cents, medium vehicles R1, and “longer” vehicles R2 a kilometre, he told reporters after Cabinet’s regular fortnightly meeting.

Qualifying commuter taxis and buses would be exempted entirely.

In addition to the 31% e-tag discount, other discounts applicable would be the time of day discount available to all vehicles, and a frequent user discount for motorcycles and light motor vehicles fitted with an e-tag.

Cabinet had agreed that Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele should give effect to the approval in terms of the SA National Roads Agency Limited and National Roads Act, Manyi said.

IMO that is still too high, considering the traffic on these roads that is daylight robbery!!!!

Cape Town - The cabinet has approved the revised tariffs for the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project, spokesperson Jimmy Manyi said on Thursday.

According to the revised tariff structure motorcycles class A1 would see their tariff reduced from 29 cents per kilometre to 24c. Light motor vehicles, class A2, would have their tariffs reduced to 40cs from 49.5c/km, medium vehicles, class B, would be 100c from 149c/km, and longer vehicles, class C, would be charged 200c from 297c/km.

The cabinet statement said that qualifying taxis (class A2) and commuter buses (class B) would be exempted from the tolls.

what i dont understand, is taxis will use the highway for business purposes [i.e. by them travelling on the highway, they make money], and we use it in private capacity [i.e. we don't make any money by travelling on the highway]

so why are they exempted?

I think the whole point of putting it that high is to alleviate the traffic, i.e. get more people onto taxis, buses & Gautrain. It's that standard solution implemented the world over, so prices will definitely increase drastically as time goes by. Only problem I see with this is that no one who is sane would be willing to get into most GP taxis & buses.

Because we (and gvt) know the sh*tstorm that will erupt if they weren't. It's just another way of milking the middle class to subsidise the rest.

Let's see if Cosatu has the balls to go through with their promise.

I might get into a bus, but **** all will i get into a taxi, i know how those okes drive. I'm on honeydew side of randburg going in to sandton, gautrain means **** all to me.

These okes are just milking the public, forcing us to uise different modes of transport in an effort to help us save money, what a crock of ****! The highways are still very busy at nights, the extra lanes have done sweet **** all.
 
So let us "the cows being milked" go burn down some sh..t. seems its the South-african way.

Where are the rates for motorcycles and when will this come into effect?
Also, last I heard (but probably wrong) was that they couldn't start tolling until they were completely done. I see quite a few places that are far from complete....

This is such BullSh&% I drive a motorbike every day to try and reduce fuel consumption etc and yet us bikers have almsot no impact on roads and really do not effect traffic flow much. Bu twe must also pay these huge toll fees? So unfair! And the Gautrain means nothing to me as it does not go near where I live or work!

They carry passengers that don't have their own cars. One taxi carries 14 people to work at a time whereas you only carry yourself in your big SUV or double cab. If taxis were made to pay they would just transfer the costs to the passengers by raising taxi fares. Public transportation is supposed to be subsidised by government like in most countries. I'm sure the Gautrain and buses are heavily subsidised. I would consider this exemption as an indirect subsidy. They also don't pay tax whereas you and I do. Why haven't you queried that one?
