So I was just reading a few articles about Scandinavian countries, some of the articles include:

By Scandinavian countries I mean Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Norway. I also want to include Holland and Switzerland.

Their per capita GDP is more than $40 000, sure enough it doesn't beat Qatar's GDP per capita by a long short. When you consider the quality of life of all its citizens then you get a better picture of the quality of life in a Scandinavian country. Corruption is low in those countries. There are a lot of great things about those countries which has left me sad because not one African country is on the right path to emulate those countries.

Sometimes I feel ashamed to be black and living in the dark continent. I also think the world might be a better place if humans only existed in Scandinavian countries, while the rest of the world only has wild life, animals, nature, etc.

Is it at all possible, 100 years from now, for at least one African country to be like a Scandinavian country?
 
Don't be so naive.

Scandinavia is heavily reliant on there being poor countries in the world to deliver many of their goods and services. The world cannot sustain every country being of the Scandinavian standard.

Also, they are really cold meaning that poor people aren't a legacy they have had to really deal with because the countries could only sustain a limited population lest one freezes to death.
 
Interesting post. I share your sentiment - it is very depressing to see how South Africa is not really making any positive progress. The way I see it, it has everything to do with work ethic. The average South African is not really motivated to work hard for his/or her own future, whereas the opposite holds true for the average Scandinavian citizen. I reckon if South African citizens can do the following three (really simple) things, we most certainly have a chance at being more like a Scandinavian country in a 100 years time:

- Work hard, earn money, pay taxes
- Not have more children than we can afford to support, including paying for children's tertiary education
- Vote for smart, educated and capable people to run the country

If this is not enough to turn this country around, it most certainly is a step in the right direction.

This is perhaps the most important. People who run countries should go through the toughest examinations, tests, and psychological analysis to ensure only the best and brightest are put in charge.
 
We should bare in mind that although Scandinavian countries have a very high standard of living, they also face challenges. Immigration to Scandinavian countries is increasing each year and citizens of those countries are not welcoming immigrants with open arms. The recent Norwegian shooting illustrates this. Chances are that immigration to Scandinavian countries will increase and right wing groups within those countries will fight against the new trend of mixing with foreigners. It will be interesting to see how they cope with this new challenge in decades to come. One thing I know is that Scandinavian countries will find it difficult to stop themselves from being isolated with races from other different countries.
 
I will probably get stoned for this, but humanity needs both to survive.

We need the survival of the fittest element in our evolution, just to ensure that the species dont stand still or go backwards.

Well they need more foreigners since most these countries population growth is in the negative.

I'd think depopulation isn't necessary a bad thing because machines and robots will end up doing human work? An aging population is a problem but not a decrease in population, just as long as it's not to much.

That without a doubt would lead to the long term extinction of all species. What an evil way to think :(

Without humans expanding and using resources, we would be stuck on this planet for a long time. Over time our sun will expand or our magnetosphere would stop and all humans and all life would die. Why on earth would you want the mass extinction of every life form?

Scandinavian countries still have amongst the highest gdp, safest, healthiest, most educated, best democracies etc. So your attempt to blacken them is absolute fail cake stuff. We know how stuff works in context ;) Your hyped FUD doesnt work here.

To place it in perspective. In NZ the area where I stayed had a "crime wave" for two months with a 200% increase in general theft. The norm for the area was 2 reported cases a month, but those two months we had 6 cases a month. Now place that number next to say the area where I stay here in PE and there crime wave looks like the best number I can only hope for.

Worse was when they spoke about the Easter weekend road deaths that is high, the whole country had like 4 people die in car accidents for Easter 2010!!! We should be so lucky.

yeah but life would be more boring. The one thing I like about Africa is that its not over regulated. We have more freedom here.
 
Well a German tourist did once tell me that one good winter would solve all our problems.
 
These countries were among the wealthiest in the world... before they instituted their welfare states. Sweden is a fine example: by staying out of World War II and having limited government and a laissez faire economy it became the wealthiest nation per capita on Earth. In the 1960's they elected a bunch of socialists who tanked the Swedish currency and economy in a matter of decades. Today Sweden has recovered, but not by scaling back their welfare state, but by returning to laissez faire economic principals. Astoundingly there is less regulation of business in Sweden than in the USA, for example!

So the moral of the story is: socialism is an engine of poverty, laissez faire is an engine of prosperity and you can have a large welfare state functioning under certain conditions, primarily that your nation is extremely wealthy in the first place. This is, however, completely separate to the question of how sustainable such a model is...

Highly unlikely.

In SA we have too many cultures making up this nation. These cultures are also very far apart in their way of thinking, too different in their value systems, what is important for the one is not necessarily important for the other etc etc. This is the reason why we as a nation cannot hold hands and stand together.

For the rest of Africa: I'll get banned....

Not unless there's an incredibly huge moral and cultural shift in the next couple of years.

The Scandinavian countries will also tank eventually, when immigrants and international media(tv shows, music) start eroding the current culture, ethics and morality structures.

Lol.. I dig you peeps.... everything is always about to or ganna die... but everything just keeps on going. lol.

If I had a Zimbabwean dollar for every person that says those systems will fail, then I personally would be able to bail out the crappy EU countries :D

Life will continue, Scandinavian countries will improve, and people will keep saying "omg we all ganna die!" no matter what :D Thats how life is.
