Following up on a rather long thread here, Vodacom have asked us to provide them with feedback relating to their proposed Blackberry soft-cap.

Let me throw this back at the forum; Assuming you believe me the vast majority sits under 100MB of BIS data (which is most likely closer to 500MB of 'normal' data), how much headroom would make you sleep at night? Double? triple?

I have requested a poll to be added to this thread so that we can provide reasonable feedback to Vodacom. I'm of the opinion that if we are reasonable about this, then based on comments made by Vodacom in the linked thread, they are willing to meet BIS users halfway and compromise. So please let's avoid the 100gig stupidity and provide mature feedback - your input could very well determine how Vodacom move forward.

If you need a little background, basically Vodacom have proposed a soft-cap of 100MB on their BIS (Blackberry) services (note that enterprise users are not affected). In turn, consumers ripped them a new one yesterday and accused Vodacom of trying to milk their customers. Vodacom have assured us that their numbers are correct and they really are looking for a solution that benefits all parties concerned - I'm inclined to believe them and we have nothing to lose by putting them to the test by voting here. Please read the last few pages of the linked thread if you'd like to see the issues raised, a summary of the thread, and Vodacom's responses.

So, go ahead and vote. Let's see mybroadband go back to its roots and champion tangible changes for consumers in the telco environment...:)

I believe that in todays times one needs more and more data and connectivity for basic Internet functionality - 2GB to me is reasonable.

I will be happy with 1GB before being shifted to EDGE. And either way, when the contract is up, it will be time to jump ship after being a customer for 13 years.

I think 1gb should be sufficient for both users and to curb abusers.

I use 1 - 1.5GB every month if i get capped i will have to move to another SP

Please note that I don't use a Blackberry!

My initial thought was to have a structure as follows :

1. Entry-level users = 1Gb as per the above posts.
2. Business users and advanced users who need push email but don't want a BES server : A selection between 3Gb and 5Gb. Per month.

That should cover most of the cases.

WITH THE OPTION TO increase the caps should 1Gb/5Gb prove insufficient in some cases. Any usage above 10Gb calls for a dedicated line and email server.

What's included in the 100MB?

Is App World and upgrades included/excluded?
Is mail/attachments included/excluded?

If its browsing ONLY and there is a 1:5 ratio, I reckon 300MB.
If its EVERYTHING, I'd go for 1GB

I did 2 gigs in and edge area before with my BB, I think people are over reacting to this. This is just to stop the people from abusing the service. My friend has a edge curve and I have a bold and our browsers open the page at about the same time. Whatsapp BBM etc, will all work out fine on edge.

2Gb minimum.

Guys why are we always left behind in this country?verizon in the usa has a 5gb soft cap on their blackberries but that's for everything....so my vote based on international best practice would be

5GB...in fact after 5gb people should probably even be throttled to GPRS rather than edge.

If you put a reasonable cap like that jannie I'm sure your customers may even start seeing vodacom in the light that they currently see CELL C ie the consumer hero.

The 300gb abusers or even 100mb abusers will not be able to hog the network as on 3g I seen a post where dudes are downloading 8gb in a day....that would be fair since any abuser can hog one port for half a day max for the entire month.

1gb and 2gb will mean we showing that we as south african consumers are willing to remain third class citizens in the global internet village....while our networks can make better than first world profits.

I would think 2GB would suffice. Then move to EDGE.
That in my opinion would be reasonable.

3 - 5 GB: Not negotiable: Anything less is living in the dark ages.

1gig.
As I've said before; my phone is not a modem. I use it for work and some play but it does not substitute a modem.

Can we first see your 95% vs 5% stats first please? How can you ask us to vote when we don't have the tools to make an informed decision or is that how it is done at Vodacom? Just pick a number?
