Intel monitor tech to boost battery life with Panel Self Refresh

I can't believe that nobody's thought of this sooner?

Maybe because it's a bad idea?

power savings are only seen with static images on-screen, and you'll need a PSR-enabled graphics processor to take advantage

Switching to ARM processors will save a lot more battery power. Also, apparently Pixel Qi is better.

Okay maybe I am just not understanding it. The monitor refreshes itself when displaying a static image. But when my laptop is on batteries it means I am busy using it which means inevitably it is not displaying a static image. Keeping in mind that a simple mouse cursor moving across the screen or typing a word document means that the GPU has to be woken up. Watching a movie is out, playing games are out.

As I said I probably just don't understand it correctly but that means ideally this will extend your battery life when watching power point slides.

If my laptop is running on batteries it means I am doing something and the machine is not idle. So I fail to see how this is going to extend the battery life of a laptop.

I personally think this is very definately a step in the right direction....

What you might find eventually is graphics processors doing stuff like "Dirty Region Processing" where the Graphis processor will only render the changes to the image and the screen itself will display the changes to the static image.
