A bill outlawing toy guns, pepper spray, knives and other "dangerous weapons" in public places is on its way to Parliament.

Die Burger newspaper reported on Monday that people found with certain objects in "suspicious circumstances" will not be able to use self-defence as an argument in court and could face up to three years in prison.

Freedom Front Plus MP Pieter Groenewald criticised the Draft Dangerous Weapons Bill, which was published recently in the government gazette.

The proposed law, he said, would allow the police to arrest people "left and right".

"The fact that you will not be able to use self-defence as a defence also makes the Bill unconstitutional," he said.

The bill defines a dangerous weapon as "any object" that cause injury or have the ability to take a person temporarily "out of action".

It says that an object can be classified as dangerous even if there is a suspicion or fear that someone may be injured.

"A woman walking late at night with pepper spray in her purse could also be rounded up because she might not be able to argue that the spray is for self-defence," Groenewald said.

The public has until Sunday to comment on the draft bill.

I can understand the need for the public to be protected but must it be at their own cost? This could only work if we had a sufficient and efficient police force; otherwise, it's going to fall flat.

Here's your opportunity to comment; in fact, how do you find out where you can comment about this proposed bill?
 
First they make it almost impossible to apply for a gun licenses, now you can't even carry around pepper spray. SA is truly becoming a criminals paradise! :(
 
jeeesh, anything can be seen as a "dangerous weapon". a Glass coke bottle, 1/2 a brick, ect. Are they nuts!
So i may not defend myself, what happened to my rights? :(
 
So I would not be allowed my knifes. First my Freaking gun now my Knifes! no no no. This is BS.
 
This is truly ****ing ridiculous. Why is the government hell bent on preventing law abiding citizens from protect themselves?

#3 - Encourage civil disorders and foster a lenient and soft attitude on the part of government toward such disorders.
#4 - Divide the people into hostile groups by constantly harping on controversial matters of no importance. (Racial differences?)

This is another ‘brick in the wall’ which bears the grubby fingerprints of the government’s mission to centralise all potential threats to their hegemony. It compliments the ‘bad dudes’ genius plan to amalgamate the Metro police with the SAPS. The ability of the citizen to defend themselves is being compromised. Other plans to remove any possible threat which gives some minor level of protection include:

#1 The commando’s have been disbanded.

This is a pity because they had the infrastructure (ambulances, hospitals, etc.), the command structure and a large, disciplined body of men who could be activated at a moments notice. They would have been useful for natural catastrophes (climate change), bush fires, floods, earth quakes, etc. They didn’t wimp-out easily.

#2 The navy has been rendered ineffectual.

#3 The air-force has been rendered ineffectual.

#4 The army has been rendered useless and has provided a patronage haven for ANC supporters.

#5 There are ongoing attempts to disarm the population.

#6 Restrictive legislation has been put into place to prevent the population from importing weaponry (to protect themselves from criminals).

#7 Any half-way effective police unit has been disbanded like child-abuse, rape etc. units and the Scorpions (of course).

#8 The ongoing attempt to centralise the metro police with the SAPS.

#9 School shooting teams have been disbanded.

Note: In SA, many all-boys high schools had shooting teams. They competed with one another.

Old people will need to hand in their dentures which can be used to bite people, the rest of us will have our teeth surgically removed.
Likewise people will have their arms and feet surgically remove as these can be used as weapons too.// end sarcasm

as far as i know the uk already has a similar law in place.
 
Some points from the bill:

It prohibits a person to carry ANY OBJECT which IS LIKELY to cause harm
when it is used to commit as assault.

Private defence is not regarded as reasonable explanation to carry the object.

A dangerous weapon is anything that in the opinion of the Minister is a dangerous weapon.

Soft-airguns, "BB" or paintball guns are now also dangerous weapons.

The manufacture, sale or import of object which are in the opinion of the
Minister dangerous weapons, is prohibited.

Maximum penalty is 3 years in jail.

How the f_uck are we supposed to defend ourselves. :mad:
