Hi guys,

I'm looking to move out of my parents house sometime next year (around June most probably) and I was looking for advice as to what to be aware of when I do move out and things you wish you knew before you moved out. Also should I buy furniture, cutlery etc. and keep it in storage? etc..

Thoughts guys?

Rule no 1:. Never share an apartment... rather go for the cheapest bachelor pad you can afford.

Start off with the essentials - get a bed, fridge and maybe a couch and TV when you do take occupation.

I wouldn't buy furniture and appliances and keep them in storage, because you'll lose a fair chunk of the guarantee.

What you should start buying now is Cutlery, Crockery, utensils, bedding etc. If you do have the cash for a fridge or another major appliance rather put the money away, and then as you move go out and buy it.

If you do end up sharing, never agree to chip in & buy groceries together as a way of saving costs. Keep your stuff locked in your fridge & you will save money. If anybody tells you eitherwise, they are lying to you.

Forgot to add I'm hoping to buy the apartment/flat.

Budget wise : looking at a 800K flat.. with my saving's I have about 25% down for the bond (no transfer fee's included) and I've put away about 25K for everything else.

The cheapest kitchenware is at Mr Price Home & Sheet Street (look out for the *priced to go*)

For me it was hectic.

What I would change about that part of my life is to save the hell up before taking that step. At the very least you should have a microwave oven, kettle, TV and a cheap second hand lounge suit and of course a bed the moment you move in

have you bought the place or are you still shopping around?

I'm still shopping around. Want somewhere close to work but not to far from my parents house(Dad is sick so need to be at my parents house quick if there's an emergency..)

Fridge is a must but rather buy as you move in, they deliver and you have one less thing to move.

For now as everyone else said, cutlery, crockery, bathroom stuff etc.

You may also want to fumigate before moving in (even if they say it's been done already).

Keep about R5K after you have all your essentials moved in because you will realise there are other things you forgot about once you are in.

Also consider security, fire protection, household insurance and all that. Put in bars/gates etc before you move in. Really not fun to get home from work to an empty apartment.

Get an idea of what your monthly electricity/water/sanitation/municipal fees etc are before buying.

edit: you can start buying canned food, non perishables, dish and normal soap, shampoo, deo etc now and start stocking up so you have a bit less to worry about on a monthly basis for the first few months.

Get yourself a very good kettle. Was the first thing I got for my flat. Don't forget nice cups.

Really didn't think of this hey..

lol, don't forget mop, bucket, broom, borsel and skollpie, tile cleaner etc :)

Yeah that stuff adds up to a lot so start buying it now. It's very annoying to move into a place and then realise that you don't have things like dish-washing liquid, dish-cloths, a nailclipper, a broom, extension cord, adapters, etc.

Good suggestion :)

Didn't have one in my first flat, boiling water on the stove first thing in the morning is not safe.
