Surely something this important justifies more investment into electronic technology? The same goes for Voting. Having something documented in handwriting on paper that requires translation by another person into a database is just screaming for mistakes to be made. Fortunately most of the questions are of the fill-the-block type, which can be scanned in.

I don't know about pen & paper. My enumerator insisted several times it had to be completed in pencil. I told her several times it was pen, or no dice. She finally conceded.
I mean really, why would STATSA think I would fill in data in pencil which could be easily erased?!

I also found the pencil thing quite odd. My mom filled out the form for our household, so I don't know if she used pen or pencil, but the form had stuff written on it in pencil by the person who brought it to the house.

They should go around with iPads (or Samsung Galaxy Tabs) and it should just be an app that you enter all your data into and then its sent through to StatsSA straight over 3G. Voting should definitely be done on those eMachines in the more populated areas.

Wherever an option was offered, I accepted. My goal was to let them know that I find it an intrusion of privacy, especially contact details and names.... but also to get the enumerator on his merry way as quickly as possible

Noble idea but then each and every data collector becomes an immediate target...
Secondly, you cannot have different systems for urban/rural areas.
Thirdly... the cost.
IMO the survey is bs, "how many rooms does your house have?" according to them we have 23 as the outside toilet and the separate shower count as rooms. Wtf is this going to help them? Also the questions on technology are also pointless....
The way the questions jump from one to another doesn't make sense as there was a question regarding my mother and wether she has ever given birth to live baby but my gran who lives under the same roof didn't qualify for this question, Fail IMHO!

Why not? Not all polling station in the States used the machines. I know the idea re tablets isnt viable but it would be awesome

Whatever works. No worries here. People think it is cool to be a pain in the a$$ or that you are some kind of hero if you give the enumerator a hard time. Newsflash, you are just being an a-hole. Get with the program.

sadly it would appear that a portion of the census survey results will be invalid if not meaningless given the general hostility of some members of our population to take part in an exercise that is meant to support government in understanding the needs of a growing population, also alas the literacy level of the enumerators may be questionable.
The guy that came to do my survey could hardly read or write, eventually I just took the form off him and completed it myself, he also got totally uncomfortable when it came to the household earnings section and told me that I could lie if I wanted to, he then also informed me that my full time live in domestic should not be included in my survey as she has rooms separate from the main house, however she was not given her own form to complete, so that's 3 people (her and her kids) that won't appear in any government statistics.

50 million odd people in the country... how many have access to internet and a pc? how many still dont have electricity/water? well census will find it out for next time

Same ones are the first to complain when they don't get infrastructure upgrades (water, sewerage, roads, schools, etc.)...
