Things are looking up for IT and telecoms job seekers

Interestingly, two companies I have spoken to are struggling to find the right skilled workers. The positions are there, there just arent enought skilled people to fulfill the roles required.

Having the same problem here (I am an IT recruiter).

The problem i find is companies typically look for the perfect match which is not always possible especially if they use a specific type of technology. IMHO i think companies should have a system in place where they can upskill potential and current employees.

Time for another Carreer junction statistic...

Hope the growth continues though

The problem with upskilling is that you spend money on a resource which bails for higher pay at the slightest chance. But this creates a problem when the general business community starts approaching IT this way, if nobody is allowed to gain certain specific skills because of fear of invested monetary loss, then that skilled resource would "dry out", causing a rift in supply as is the case with some positions.

That happens because companies pay employees as little as possible, so employees learned to move easier between jobs, which usually means a guaranteed salary increase as opposed to a company that can make empty promises, or only do the minimum required yearly salary increase.

Personally I have been at a company for more than 5 years now, however I am always on the lookout for other alternatives. Sadly...not than many opportunities for what I do specifically, or would like to do. I can easily branch out, as I can do other things too, but I don't per say like them.

Agreed!! as a soon to be graduate, I'm finding it difficult to look for companies offering graduate programmes or junior positions that don't require the 1-2 yrs experience. Or maybe I am just looking in the wrong places -__-"

"Inflation" related increases which are much less than real cost of living increases means that job-hopping is often the only way to keep afloat :(

I am looking for specific skills too - very hard to find good tibco and informatica skills.

My company had an across the board ceiling of 5% on increases - that's even BELOW inflation! I have been there for 15 years. I of course, being a white mail, and wary of moving somewhere else because of the last in first out concern. But for years I have moaned about why, as a loyal employee, my increases are less than if I had job-hopped. Companies just want to pay as little as possible always. I understand - I don't like it but I understand.

White mail ?

Whats that ? When they pay you to release incriminating information about yourself ?

its not worth being a loyal employee in the IT sector. After 2 years - you reach your maximum potential at a company, they not going to give you more money, because you are not worth it. Yet you goto another company you will get a 5k increase because you will be moving up a level so to speak.

I have moved up TWO times in the same company, and only had a 20% increase in yearly salary only because I moved from contractor to permanent.

Just the other day we were told that Indians were going to take our jobs, so what is it now ?

i suppose ppl who make these stats make more money to publish the lies about the state of affairs. Qualified ppl are there for most roles except they are not good enough for the recruiters. With over 15years experience and loads qualifications, I sent out a tonne of applications earlier, this got two responses and I see a report which says there is general shortage of skills. These vacancies are just there to create an impression.

I have 11 years of experience as a developer, and I have seen this. Though I am not actively looking, I get a recruiter query about once a month at least. I think that there is a skill shortage across the IT industry, partially due to the brain drain (a lot of countries are also trying to beef up their IT sector)

Agreed. After spending over 4 years at the same company it became a bit ridiculous that I may get *up to* 6% increase depending on performance - and that's the supposed inflationary increase, not a performance increase alongside an inflation based one.

I changed jobs and got way more than 6% extra, for doing easier work.

Aaa.. the classic trap I fell for too. I used to think the EXACT same thing. When I wanted to move (due to outsourcing).. I had lots of emails/phone calls etc. Thought WOW... there are lots of jobs out there...

Then I went for the interviews and discovered...

They are
1)Paying way too little
2)You are too Expensive (average salary IMHO)
3)Not EXACT skills (they are not willing to train, you match 95% skill)

So all those possible jobs gets cut down to a 1/4...
