Linksys E4200 Wireless-N Router review (MyBroadband)

If you're going to buy a dedicated broadband router (as opposed to a combined ADSL/wireless router) then you really should be buying the Linksys WRT54GL. Put a custom firmware on there like DD-WRT or Tomato and you have the best consumer grade router known to man. All these new routers have rubbish wireless connectivity and QOS control.

Plus the TP-link can run DD-WRT and has usb and gigabit ethernet for probably less than the price of a WRT54GL.

Anyway... article is retarded. Starts off with:
The Linksys E4200 is a wireless-N router with advertised speeds up to 350Mbps (on 2.4 GHz) and 400Mbps (on 5 GHz)
and then basically has no mention of any sorts of wireless speeds or mention of what client access devices one would need to achieve those advertised speeds. The range is pretty vague as well. In fact the article talks about the weather more than speeds...

Sorry for hijacking this thread, but I'm thinking of getting the TP-Link TL WR1043ND. What's the benefit in getting the DD-WRT firmware over just using the stock one? I'm not an advanced user but if there is a significant performance / QoS increase then I think it might be worth it.

I have a TP-Link, and I must say, I misses my Linksys router (old 54 Mbps one) for the amazing reliability. Seems like I am resetting the TP-Link at least once a day. You'll find that the review also found the TP-Link unreliable.

I purchased this unit week and half ago.

Unit is running very stable, Cisco for the Win!!!

Love the interface. I'm still busy testing some settings here and there.

And it doesn't work with Linux? Pft!

I think this refers to the setup software only. The router will still work with Linux, just not the Cisco Connect Software. This is a great router, the reviewer failed to mentioned it also sports a Media Server. I've been streaming HD files to my XBOX without any problems.

Price wise is worth every Rand spent!! None other router comes close to the performance of the E4200!

As an owner of the E4200 in a windows free home, you're 100% correct. Throw away the cd and connect to the web interface and you're good to go. Mine has been running for months without being rebooted.

These installation CDs for routers are nothing more than a crutch for the feeble minded who don't know anything about networking. Any IT or network professional would immediately throw away the CD and configure the router directly through the web interface.
