Nokia 700 or HTC Desire S

I am going to upgrade in about a months time and a friend of mine is upgrading in one weeks time. We both have Nokia 5800s and have played around with some of the newer Nokia handsets like the E7, C7 and N8. Although we wanted to get Nokia 701s it seems this phone is not coming to SA, my friend decided to get an HTC Desire S instead and it looks like a pretty good phone to me so I am also considering it.

There are two thing I need to know before I can go the Android route.

1) does the Desire S have a Mass Storage mode like all Nokia phones do? Can it expose my memory card as a flash drive via USB?

2) are there any offline GPS navigation software for the Desire S? I need something like Ovi/Nokia Maps where I can download maps data for a country using my PC and then have the phone use this in offline mode. A nice to have is Afrikaans voice navigation but English voice navigation is an absolute requirement.

Any help on these two questions will be greatly appreciated.
 
... and maybe then after your third read you can attempt to help me with the two very crucial questions keeping me from moving away from the Nokia 700 which is readily available in SA.
 
Thanks for clearing up the mass storage matter.

When you say I need to pay for maps, what maps are we talking about and how much will it cost me? Caching map data is not an option. I want full control of the map data that gets put on my phone and I want to download additional countries and languages at will. So Google Maps is out.

Any one else that can help with the navigation problem? I must admit, I never though it would be this hard to get straight answers regarding android. I thought it had so many users and that all of them would be only too happy to help a potential new user to the platform.
 
There are a few free map apps that you can download. Google maps comes with by default. There is also Mapquest and most Android phones comes with Latitude, Places, Navigation. There are lots to try.
 
Desire S has mass storage capabilities and there are Navigation apps available (search and you can find "free" ones)

I would go desire S purely for Android - I have the Desire and love it only negative is the storage for apps available which they upped in the S.

You can download a free app called Sygic: GPS Navigation. Search for it in the Android market. You can then buy South Africa's maps (from Tom Tom). I can't remember the exact price at the moment, and I can't seem to find it, but it's in the region of R300 if I remember correctly.

Thanks, but for me navigation is crucial and I am not going to buy the phone just to try out apps and then find non of them have the same functionality as Nokia Maps. I have seen TomTom on an iPhone and it does everything I like, even Afrikaans navigation, is there one for Android?

Sorry but for me its function before OS - the Desire S does trump the 700 on a few technical specs but if it does not navigate in offline mode its a no go.

I think we have a winner - had a look on their site and looks like this can do everything I want. Once my buddy has his Desire S I'll try to talk him into buying Sygic. If it does what I think it does then I think I'll go with the Desire S too in January.

At least my wife will still have her E7 so I'll have some backup to rely on :)
 
Nokia does have an HTML5 version of Ovi maps that is exclusive to Android and it seems the have an app to. Would be excellent to see that on a Desire S - maybe its just as good as the Symbian build.

I also recommend Co Pilot. I have it, costs about R300. The only thing I haven't looked for is if it supports Afrikaans - because I haven't checked for alternative languages.
