THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) – Thousands of children suffered sexual abuse in Dutch Catholic institutions, and church officials failed to adequately address the abuse or help the victims, according to a long-awaited investigation released Friday.

The report by the an independent commission said Catholic officials failed to tackle the widespread abuse "to prevent scandals."

Based on a survey among more than 34,000 people, the commission estimated that one in 10 Dutch children suffered some form of abuse. The number doubled to 20 percent of children who spent some of their youth in a Catholic institution.

The commission said it received some 1,800 complaints of abuse at Catholic schools, seminaries and orphanages and that the institutions suffered from "a failure of oversight."

Typical, this is probably the main reason the institution was built. To molest children.

Burn down all nearby churches, seize their combined assets and dispose of all near by priests and pastors. This is the only way to prevent this from happening again and again.

Rather strong comment, I guess. For me it shows that an institution, that advocates strict celibacy for their clergy, still is extremely reluctant to acknowledge family planning and will not allow abortions in any circumstances doesn't belong to this era any more. But most abuse took place decades ago, and perpetrators have died. The number of 10% of all Dutch children abused appears very high, wonder if they got the statistics, numbers right.The Dutch have probably become more open about this. Bet you, it was worse in more traditional Roman Catholic countries in southern Europe and Latin America and Ireland. They probably lack the courage to investigate this in such a comprehensive fashion. But nothing can justify this abuse.

Ghoti, interesting article on modern/social Liberalism on Wikipedia. Maybe a good alternative for the present too socialist/semi communist ideas of the present Gov here, with their centrally Luthuli House controlled Nanny State.
 
Backwards religion. Child raping Christians. Sounds familiar ? Back to reality , it saddens me deeply to see how people who are there to help abuse their position of trust. I sincerely hope the victims can find it in their hearts to forgive and move on and that the guilty are punished in this life and the next.

I would like to point out in case any backward people out there think otherwise , the first statement I made sarcastically. I have too many loving good christian friends to ever let a few tarnish the christian faith.

Seems to be world wide.....and that institution still seems to be in the dark ages as far as the reality of contraception and sexuality is concerned ... country's that are predominantly of that faith seem to just perpetuate poverty and misery that contraception seems to alleviate . non so blind as those that wont see !!

Children are molested anywhere & anytime where "some" adults have the opportunity.

This is not something "particular" to the Catholics or even churches.
When it happens at churches it's merely MUCH more sensational because it's so against what churches stand for.

They (Catholics) have the longest history of mixing adults & children unsupervised (bar the old style reform schools, work houses and orphanages).

In the US, 30 to 40% of women remember being molested.
Half of these took place AT HOME, by family members.
