the Concordia’s captain, Francesco Schettino, and first officer Ciro Ambrosio were detained last night at the police station in Porto Santo Stefano on the Italian mainland, as they faced continuing questioning about the events leading up to the disaster. Prosecutors are investigating possible charges of multiple manslaughter and abandoning the ship while passengers were still in danger.
Prosecutor Francesco Verusio said the Concordia had approached the tiny island of Giglio ‘the wrong way’, while sources said that the 52-year-old captain, from Naples, had abandoned the ship at around 11.30pm local time – about an hour after it struck a rocky outcrop and started taking in water – while the last passengers were not taken to safety until 3am yesterday morning.

What happened to Captains going down with their ships? Tsk tsk tsk.

Reminds me of the incident off our coast a few years back, where the crew jumped ship and left the passengers to fend for themselves.

Ja, what's up with the crew jumping ship first? Saw that thing about that big ferry disaster in europe where lot's of people died, captain in crew did not even warn the passengers and just jumped ship. Think they got jail sentences of like 30yrs or something.

Ocean liner captains - they don't make them like they used to.

Why the hell be that close to shore anyway?

How did it get so close to the shore though? They have all that ocean out there to float in, no need to be so close?

Captain was charged with manslaughter they say.
He said the maps didn't show rocks under water in that area. The owner of the cruise ship is also in the captain's corner apparently. The truth will come out though and I can imagine a long court case.

Maybe the maps were drawn before Global Warming and showed rocks above the water. Due to Global Warming those rocks are now under the water.

Shees ... brings back memories. Did a cruise (in the same area) on one of her sister ships, the Costa Victoria 15 years ago.

Even back then a tour of the bridge showed it was completely digital and ultra high-tech. How the crew managed to duff it up so bad with an additional decade of advancement in navigation technology/systems amazes me?
